cardiff uni llb

Okay, so I'm an international student at the University of Law, LLB program integrated with a foundation year. I have just completed the foundation year and will be starting the LLB course in September. I also got an offer for the LLB course at Cardiff University. If I do take it, then I'll have to reapply for a new visa, which is quite a long and stressful process, as well as pay the NHS subcharge again. I'm also aware that while Cardiff is a Russell Group uni, it's not a tier 1 or a tier 2 RG. I really do want to take the offer, but I also want to make the most logical decision. So I guess what I'm asking is if Cardiff Uni is worth it?

Hey there!!

Congratulations on getting an offer at both University of Law and Cardiff University for an LLB. I understand that it is tough choice to make and I just wanted thought I could help you on some tips on what could help make a decision:

1.

Course Structure and Tutors

I would recommend trying to get in touch with the universities, through Open Days or other events held, in order to understand who are the tutors and professors at the universities. I didnt realise the important of this until I started my classes at Ulaw. The professors at Ulaw are honestly just amazing, they have been qualified professionals before so their methods are just very effective and helpful. I enjoy this aspect of my classes a lot, so I would recommend looking into it.

1.

Finances

It is very important to compare the course fees and living expenses (if it is a major concern in particular circumstances). I made charts of tuition expenses, living expenses, and others for all my university choices and it was helpful. I got in touch with previous students from my chosen universities using this app called, Uni Buddy. It is so helpful because it connects with you specific students on your courses and almost alll universities are on it. So, please do make use of this when you can.

I understand the visa costs is an issue and I completely understand this. So, it would be best to weigh how expensive the course really becomes after all these costs. Check if your long term goals are being majorly affected, if not for this change?

I am an international student too, so I understand the pressure. Therefore, I advise make the best choice by considering the factors I discussed today.

1.

Career fairs and opportunties

University of law has constant career fairs with law firms visiting all the time. This makes networking with law trainees very easy because they are just on campus with you. So, always check with past students how effective the law fairs are and what types of firms attend them.

1.

Student Societies

At University of Law there are soo many student societies that makes the student life really fun. So, you should make sure to check if your interests allign with the student societies. It only makes the experience better.

I do hope you make the best choice for yourself!!

Congratulations to your Cardiff offer. You must have done extremely well, international foundations are highly uni-specific and changing uni is exceptional.

Look at the course modules of ULaw and Cardiff. Particularly on those modules on fundamental principles like Constitutional Law, law and individual etc. You may notice that top-tier law schools place quite significant emphasis on these.

If you go to Cardiff, the "surplus/un-used" of the NHS covering the 3-year ULaw LLB will be funded. So on balance you only need to pay for the visa (£250 for student visa?).

Well done on your offer to Cardiff!

It's worth noting that Russel Group membership, whilst a prestigious title in itself, is a reflection of the research intensity of a given university. So it's basically saying that Cardiff is great with research - but, if you're interested in a non-research-related career, placement or tiers might not be as important, when it comes to the long term, e.g., careers. So if you're interested in Cardiff, I would say go for it!

In general, I would say the law department is pretty good at what it does. They offer lots of extra-curricular activities such as the Pro Bono Unit and Schemes, and I've heard a lot of good things about the Law Society here at Cardiff's Student Union, where they offer lots of networking and workshop opportunities.

I will always recommend Cardiff as a brilliant place to study, however, when asking whether its "worth it", it always depends on someone's individual circumstances and priorities  If it helps to make a logical decision, writing down the pros and cons of each decision helps a lot for me!
