Are you worrying about exams or deadlines?

Feeling overwhelmed with a pile of work for your studies? Worrying about exams? University of Staffordshire Library and Academic Skills team are here to help.

We’ve got 10 top tips for planning and managing your time, as well as dealing with exam stress.

1. Plan the days before your deadlines or exams in a detailed way. Make sure that you create a timetable which includes some time when you can concentrate, and some time when you can relax. Factor in things you must do like walking your dog, doing shopping, exercising. Factor in some “catch up” slots in case unexpected things happen; you have a visitor you didn’t expect, the bus runs late home from work, it’s sunny and you fancy sitting outside. Don’t stress over time you can’t have back: keep moving forward positively.

2. Make sure to do the hardest or most challenging things when you feel most alert. This time will be different for everyone. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Maybe you like to work after a morning run, or you might prefer late at night when your home is quiet. Whatever is good for you, do the tough stuff then.

3. Have a small treat after you’ve done a couple of hours at the difficult thing. Some thing nice to eat, a glass of juice, an episode of your favourite show on YouTube, a quick burst of your favourite music. No one can study all day. Plan to relax: it’s good for the learning process.

4. Study something you find easier after you’ve studied something challenging. Just focusing on the difficult topics all day will make you feel very unconfident. Mix it up so you revise something you find easier after a hard subject. This will boost your confidence with both the easy and the tough topics.

5. Late night cramming may work for some, but it isn’t an ideal strategy. Better to decide a time to finish your studying before the exam and get some rest. Sleep helps consolidate your day’s studying.

6. Make sure you know where you need to be for the exam and what you are allowed to take in the exam room with you. Make sure you know your travel arrangements to get to the venue.

7. Eat before your exam! Most people use lots of energy in an exam so make sure your nerves don’t put you off eating well to fuel that busy brain.

8. Read the instructions on the exam paper. If you don’t understand anything, ask the invigilator.

9. Wear layers in the exam room in case it is hotter or cooler than you expected.

10. Once you’ve finished your exam don’t go over it in your mind or with other people. Especially don’t do this if you think it didn’t go well. You can’t alter it, so forget about it and start on the next task.
