QMUL vs York insurance choice for chemistry

This is going to be a long(-ish?) post as I’m really trying to figure this out.

For context:

I’m in Year 13 trying to decide on an insurance uni for chemistry (with industrial placement year)
I live in London
I want to be educated well at uni, but I’m really looking for personal growth
I’m interested in becoming a toxicologist (but if it doesn’t work out, I wouldn’t mind working in other sectors..)
I tend to get bored of places easily, so I hope to travel in the future (a bit more than the average person anyway)
(I’ve firmed Manchester if you think that’s relevant)

I have to choose between QMUL and York. York seems to have better teaching quality and I prefer the course, but I’m unsure about the city and social life there. I’ve heard that rent is expensive in York, and I don’t want to struggle after Y1 if I no longer live in uni accommodation.
QMUL is a commutable distance so I don’t need to worry about accommodation costs. But a reason I’m hesitant to go there is that some people I know are going, which might sound silly but I’d prefer to be somewhere new with people I don’t know.
This is a plus for York I guess? But as I mentioned above, I tend to get bored of places easily, and am afraid I’ll get bored of York since it’s a small city. York also doesn’t seem to be the most diverse; I’m worried this might impact me in impractical ways (e.g. finding hairstylists, products, cultural foods..)

Could anyone shed some light on my situation? There are other things I’ve considered too, but I’m still unsure and don’t want to ramble for too long. Thank you in advance!

You like York's course more than Queen Mary's. But you will save over £20k over 3 years on accommodation if you go to Queen Mary.

You easily get bored at places so Queen Mary might be less preferred. But York is really very small compared to London, you will definitely get bored with months, before Christmas.

Uni is a completely new experience where you will meet over hundreds, or thousands new faces. So Queen Mary will give you similar student life experience to York.

Teaching quality at Queen Mary would unlikely be poorer than York, both are RG unis anyway. You may narrow down your criteria to course structures and money. Good luck.

Good advice above.
The other question of course is, how likely are you to need this Insurance - how secure do you feel about your Firm?

Hey there,

It's lovely to hear that you're considering York as your insurance choice. You've had some good advice from cksiu, I just have a couple more thoughts to add 😀

There are a couple of other things that I'd consider when picking your insurance choice:

1.

Where do you see yourself more, York or QMUL? I'm sure you'll meet the requirements of your offer for Manchester, but if you don't, you might find yourself at your insurance choice. And it is three to five years of your life, so it ideally needs to be somewhere you'd like to live.

2.

Would you be happy living at home for the duration of uni, or would you want to move out? If it's the latter, then have a look at the cost of renting to study at QMUL as well as the rent costs in York. See whether there's much difference in affordability.

3.

Would you like to explore a new city, or are you happy to stay in your home town? I agree with cksiu, York will be tiny compared to London, but it will still be a new place to explore. I'm from Manchester, so York also seemed small to me, but I loved my time as a student there and never felt I was missing out on a “big city” experience. York is not an isolated place either, we're a short train ride from Leeds, we're near the North Yorkshire Moors, coastal towns, and it's easy to get across to Manchester and up to Edinburgh as well.

Finally, to answer your question about diversity in York. We have a number of international supermarkets and loads of international restaurants, so it should be possible for you to get your home comforts while in York. For a smaller city, we punch above our weight in terms of the shops, restaurants and events on offer.

If you can, I'd come for a day trip to York, to explore it for yourself, see if you see yourself there, and also see what the journey would be like between home and York. You can take a self-guided tour of the campus and the city on the Visit UoY app.

I hope this helps! Best of luck in your exams, and I hope you make the right decision for you - Hannah 😀
