Finished my exams today and feel empty

I didn't have a great time at uni, never made many friends. Still feels really weird now that it's over. I'm working on getting a grad job and have some interviews coming up.

Anyone have any advice?

Hi @JoeChill,

Well done for completing your exams and best of luck on your results! I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a great time, university can be a different experience for everyone. However, it's great that despite that you still went on and completed your course, you should be proud! 🙂

Being a recent graduate myself, I definitely understand how you are feeling. I always felt weird when I was handing in my submissions and finishing college/university. You spend 3-4 years studying and then all of a sudden it's done.

Having done some interviews myself, I can give you my take on it. My first advice would be to be prepared. I'm sure you've been told this but being prepared for an interview is so important. Do your research on the company you are applying for to make sure it's the right work place for you but also to show your employer that you are interested. Do you have similar points of views with the brand's ethos?

Interviewing and waiting to hear back from employers is a very uncertain time, so don't be hard on yourself. Interviews definitely get better with practice. I could notice improvements in my confidence, how I sold myself and engaged with the interviewers the more interviews I went to. There are also ways you can practice by finding some common interview questions and also doing some research into some less commonly asked questions. Don't forget to have questions you also want answers to. An interview is a two way street so it's your chance to find out more about the company, work place and the role too. Questions you ask can be personal to you but I always like to end my interviews by asking what everyone's favourite time working at the company is, this is a question that went down well and was a nice end to the interview.

What roles are you applying for? I was applying for social media/marketing roles and being a creative visual person, I would bring something physical to my interviews, which I found did really well. It gives the employer something to remember you by. For example, if there was a task to do for the interview, I would make it visual and appealing but also have a printed copy for them to look at and keep after the interview.

Lastly, does your university have career support for graduates? That may be of interest to you if it's an option, as you could do mock interviews, get help looking over your applications and get help with your CV...

Let me know if you have any further questions 🙂
Best of luck, ^Zac
