The attraction of Business and Management is the opportunity for innovation and creativity within a dynamic environment and the opportunity to implement creative ideas to explore potential gaps within a market. After founding my first business in 2020 in the pandemic, I learnt that the idea is just the first step, and managing employees, finances, and especially time was extremely important. The gap in the YouTube market for therapeutic content is where I found my niche. This idea stemmed from the fact that the world has become more competitive, particularly for young people to do well. The channel provides the outlet of speculative gameplay whilst listening to calming sounds (ASMR). This has been proved to help people suffering from anxiety, depression, and stress. The success of the channel is evidenced by over 25,000 subscribers and over 3 million views. Economics has opened my mind up to the challenges and restrictions certain industries and businesses face. Concepts such as barriers to entry, startup costs, investment, and competition are topics that during my course I have educated myself on beyond the subject curriculum. This concept has focused my area of reading to cryptocurrency and fintech for dummies, enabling my further understanding of accessing investment from venture capitalists to learn about how businesses can gain funding and capital. Similarly, German aligns with my ambitions to expand my career in business to entering the German/European market. I realise the importance of understanding the difference in business practices as well as the value in speaking a foreign language as an attribute. The rise of right-wing and nationalist movements in Europe and the West, such as Germany's Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), is fostering a political climate that prioritises domestic industries and stricter immigration policies, pushing countries toward protectionism. In Germany, the AfD's growing support, fuelled by polarisation over issues like economic inequality and immigration, reflects a shift to de-globalisation.This further establishes nationalist sentiments, making protectionist policies more politically viable as governments respond to pressure to shield local economies and workers from perceived external threats. Media Studies has helped me identify consumer wants and needs and has contributed to my marketing abilities, particularly in advertising. The entrepreneur Mark Cuban's "How to Win at the Sport of Business" offers practical insights. I was drawn to how he continuously emphasises the relentless work ethic and adaptability required to seize opportunities in the dynamic world of business. I recently enjoyed an internship working at Raisin, a B2B fintech branch. This experience gave me a great insight. I was working on a research team on an expansion task; this developed my analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Conversations with the co-founders emphasised the importance of sustaining a wide range of business relationships that may be useful in the future. Having attended a London Stock Exchange lecture, I approached them independently to secure work experience in the compliance and legal departments. Learning about the variety of the roles of the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) and understanding how vital compliance is for a financial institution, as failing to comply can lead to huge legal and cost complications for the firm. I also realised that despite the difference in size and complexity of Raisin and The London Stock Exchange, the compliance functions were actually remarkably similar and consistent. I am an active member of the sixth form Finance Society, House Captain, and a member of the first XI football team. I am also an academic mentor. I have a job working in silver service at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, and I play football for an U18s and men's football club. I very much look forward to contributing to all aspects of university life: academic, sporting, and social.
My firm choices were between ucl and Manchester. Ended up firming Manchester as I got rejected from UCL and put Edinburgh as my insurance. Definitely apply to ucl if u are career driven. But try and get an A* in ur predictions as I feel as if that’s what they’re looking for.
