Year 0 / Foundation at Carmel College - Questions

Hi all, just want to ask those who studied a Foundation Year at Carmel College.

I’m in my 20s so I will be a mature student. I’ve been offered a place at the University of Liverpool to study a Foundation Year at Carmel College. I was wondering if you could share your experience of Year 0.

1) What was your timetable like? Were there days with long gaps between classes? Were the classes more like college lessons or university-style lectures?

2) Also, how often were you at Carmel College was it five days a week? I’m asking because I feel I’m past living in halls (though I may consider it in Year 1, once the course moves closer to Liverpool centre).

3) Since Carmel is a bit of a commute, I’d like to understand how manageable it is. How long was your commute? It would take me just under an hour each way by car from home do you think that’s doable?

4) How did you find the teaching at Carmel? I didn’t take Science A-Levels, which is why I’m taking the foundation route. Was it really hard to get your head around? Are the classes recorded or not?

5) How are you graded and what is the percentage to pass?

6) Lastly, were you able to work a part-time job alongside your studies? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I have an offer for foundation year at Liverpool/Carmel as well. What's your subject? I've been trying to find more info about the course but there isn't much out there sadly

Diagnostic Radiography! What’s yours?
Also do you mind if I ask if are you a school leaver or a mature student?

I did manage to get some information but more regarding Carmel College itself and not much about the course content.

Awesome! Mine is medicine  and yeah I'll be a mature student, I'm 26. Did you get an invite to the applicant discovery day in June? Seems like we'll just have to wait for that for more info about the course itself haha

I’m 25 turning 26 soon so looks like we’re in similar boats! It took me a while to decide, but I’ve settled on Diagnostic Radiography. I was one of those who had no clue growing up, but working definitely gave me more perspective.

Good luck with your Medicine studies, fellow mature student! We might see each other at Carmel in the future haha.

I haven’t had a Discovery Day invite yet, but it sounds great. Definitely something I’d like to attend to get a feel for the foundation year. Maybe it’s because I haven’t firmed my offer yet? Have you firmed yours?

—————————
Also I thought I’d just copy and paste some answers to a question I asked a UoL student who did a Foundation year at Carmel. They did Biological Sciences so it might be different but it may be of some help and give some insight.

1) What were the classes like?
“So classes for me were more like college lessons, but I think that was because we were actually in a college (no lecture theatres or specific dedicated workshop/seminar rooms).”

2) What was the timetable like across the week and your commute like?
“I was in 5 days a week with some gaps in between my classes, but on a Wednesday everyone finishes at 1pm regardless due to sports, it’s a national thing across all unis as far as I’m aware.
I did a commute of around an hour and a half there and the same back and found it quite manageable.”

3) How did you find the difficulty and what was the modules like if you don’t come from a STEM background/didn’t do any Science A-Levels?
“So I did do science but the course (for me personally) seems to be designed in a way to bridge the gap for people who don’t come from a STEM background. During my time there, they were very good at building on content and starting from the basics, as they realise that everyone will come from a variety of stages.”

Wow, definitely sounds a lot like myself. I changed around a lot when I was a younger student, didn't really know what I wanted to do and also had some personal difficulties. But radiography is great from what I've heard, I'm sure you'd really enjoy it.

And yes I did firm my offer! That could be why you didn't get an invite, but honestly I thought it was like an offer-holder day so I don't see why you haven't got one. Maybe contact the uni?

Ahh thanks for that, that's some good insight!

Really hope to see you at Carmel, but best of luck whatever you decide

It’s really nice knowing we’ve had similar journeys and I’m not alone in that. I think being a mature student means my head will be in the right place and I’ll be more focused, now that I know what I want to achieve.

Thanks for the kind words and I hope you enjoy studying Medicine too! 🙂

If you have any more questions, I’m happy to reach out to the student who studied at Carmel again just let me know and I’ll pass them on.

I’ll definitely contact the university and Carmel about the Discovery Day. I’ve got many birthday celebrations in June, so fingers crossed it doesn’t clash! Do you happen to know the exact date? Would be a shame to miss it. If I don’t get an invite/can’t attend would it be okay to message you after for any useful info you picked up?

I’m pretty sure I’ll firm this offer though! Liverpool’s close to home, and the other uni I applied for is still deciding, haha. Good luck to you also! 🍀

I completely agree  having some life experience will go in our favour I'm sure!

The applicant discovery day is on the 11th June, and there's also an online event on the 10th (in the evening I believe) so maybe you could ask to be added to that if you can't attend in person? But of course feel free to message me if you can't make it, and I can keep you informed! Also if you do take the offer at Carmel feel free to DM me anyway  will be good to keep contact!

I’m in the same boat! I’m 26 and I’ll be on the veterinary pathway, hopefully will see you guys at Carmel!

It’s been tricky to find much information on the course and what people’s experiences have been, hopefully the discovery day will fill in some gaps for us

Hey! Oh that's great! I'll definitely be there. Did you get accommodation sorted yet?

And yeah absolutely, just have to wait for the discovery day. It's exciting though, just wish we knew more ugh

Hey! That’s fab, I’ll see you there! It’s super exciting, there’s just so much more I want to know.

Accommodation wise I’m not really sure, what about you? I’ve applied, although I’m looking at private as well as I’m not loving the idea of living with wild 18 year olds hahaha

Awesome  Yeah same haha

I applied for uni halls, got my offer through for Philharmonic Court  yeah you make a good point haha, I did hear they're supposed to place you with other students of the same year so I'm hoping I'll be put with other foundation year students? Although I don't know for sure. Kinda at least hoping I'm put with other mature students 😬

Hi! It’s nice to see another mature student in the same boat (and we’re all the same age, I’m turning 26 next month)! 😀

Good luck with your studies!

Thanks so much, I emailed them and got an invite today! So I’ll be going to the Discovery Day! Maybe we’ll see each other then who knows haha.

It'll be lovely to meet you both at Carmel. I think it would be nice to keep in touch as we're all in similar boats (if you want we can exchange contacts) or in future could study together and grab coffee together too!

So currently I plan to live at home. Even if I lived in halls I would still have to commute (plus I don’t like the idea of living with 18 year olds haha). It's a 55 min drive which is the nearly same as living in halls and taking the bus.

But I'm weighing up whether it might be better to move closer + drive. Saves me energy for studying haha.

Oh that's great to hear! Yeah I'll be there

And of course sounds great, I'm happy to exchange contacts! Yeah I think the accommodation guarantee deadline for the uni is end of July so you have time if you ever wanted to apply for it.

Yeah the only other thing that bothers me a bit is the commute, seems like it'll be around an hour each way by bus. Kinda hoping I can carpool with someone and contribute to fuel hahaha

Thanks for the heads-up about the accommodation deadline. I’ll have a proper think. My job is a 10 minute drive from home, so staying put makes sense, especially if I can cut my hours once uni starts. But being closer to campus would really help with the early classes… decisions, decisions!

Yes, the Year 0 commute sounds rough 😭. I think I’ve decided I will be firming Liverpool though! If we finish around the same time, I don’t mind giving you a lift back to Philharmonic Court. It’s near some of my favourite restaurants/tea spots, so I might stop there myself haha. Hopefully you get placed with other foundation or mature students and one of them drives, so you can carpool and avoid that hour-long bus ride for 9AMs haha.

I’ll DM you my contacts so we can stay in touch! Looking forward to starting this new chapter and glad I won’t be the only mature student 😀. Good luck and hopefully see you at Discovery Day!

Yeah that makes sense! As much as it would be nice to have you in halls, I think it makes sense you staying as the commute isn't great from halls anyway. Gosh I wish I lived closer haha, I live like 4 hours away from Liverpool. Let me know what you decide

Awesome that's such good news that you're firming Liverpool! Yeah the commute sounds like a nightmare honestly. If I can't carpool I at least hope I can find someone else to suffer the commute with 😭

Thank you so much for the offer of lifts, I really appreciate that you're so kind. You'll have to show me some of those places! Never been to Liverpool so definitely need to go exploring.

I'll DM you too  really looking forward to it as well. Not sure what it's like for radiography but for the medicine route you normally have to have been out of education for 5 years, as it's not designed for school leavers. So chances are we'll find a lot more mature students!

Aww, 4 hours? Sure I will do if I change my mind  !

I’m sure you won’t be the only one commuting to Carmel, so don’t stress. But yes, I don’t mind being the taxi driver on the way back if needed 🤣! Sure I can show you some places, I think Liverpool’s a great city with something for everyone, so if you ever want recommendations let me know 😊

Just replied to your DM! That’s great you’ll be with other mature students for Medicine. I think Radiography will have a mix, but the admissions team did say there are some mature students enrolled so fingers crossed! 😅

Yep 😭 could be worse!

Aw that's so nice  thank you! Wouldn't want to put you out, so we'll see how things go

I'm sure there'll be plenty in our position, mature students doing radiography as well. We'll be fiiiiine!
