those stats are so grim :/
Maybe but remember they are averages and they don’t provide a view on the range. That said, they do provide at least an indication of the levels required.

Yes, but the averages are so high that they will be dragged down by lower results more than they will be increased by higher ones; I would suspect the median is even higher

I know what you mean !! I’m ok on the averages, but on the offers it’s more scary!
However, the results are out of context. At my state school we don’t even get to sit that number of GCSEs, we only did 9.

Oxford Mum and I have never paid too much heed to stats. If there is an entrance exam it is much more important to do well in that than fret over gcse results you cannot contextualise. If you get an interview that will be the main determinant on whether you get a place.

Yup...school finally got their act together and my sons is submitted. How long does it take to hear anything back. I think interviews are early December, so I guess November will be possible?

You can only achieve at the limits of the opportunity available to you and this is exactly why applicants are fully assessed in the context of their situation. If gcse grades are below the offer averages then it’s entirely feasible to make up for this across other aspects of your application e.g. entrance test, reference, submitted work and interview. This is particularly true for anyone applying with strong A level grades already in hand since admission tutors are well aware that predicted grades can be unreliable at times. Indeed the Cambridge August Reconsideration Program offers an excellent route for eligible contextual applicants who perform strongly in their A levels (and only have this confirmed on results day) but weren’t offered a place in January. The bottom line though, is that places are highly competitive and are offered to the most academically able students, as they should be.

Totally agree DV - I would think that those who score highly in aptitude tests would probably have great GCSE grades too (correlation I’m thinking).

I think last year early ones were about 17th Nov but very much fits and starts from various colleges and no real patterns to speak of.The rollercoaster that is Oxford Application process!🎢

Hi everyone, I've just applied to Balliol college to study English language and literature. This looks like a friendly and helpful thread so I thought I'd join in. Am waiting for Balliol to get back to me with instructions on how to submit written work, and then after that I'll just wait to hear if I've been invited for any interviews. I know it's not the be-all-end-all if I don't get accepted, but still I'm very nervous. If you don't hear back from me about my interviews then assume I've been rejected.

Good luck 🤞with your application and a useful reminder to everyone to get their written work selected and ready. Please remember work must be marked and written in supervised conditions. There are always panics at the last minute each year on here so lets see if you guys can do better!😊

Hello. Do you know if there are any subject or college specific application threads for Oxford? A quick search did not reveal any, but I am sure there have been some in the past. Thank you!

Good afternoon all,
I’m a parent, and my daughter’s detail as below:
1) A level subject: Art, Biology, Chemistry all predicted A*
2) Apply for Medicine
3) GCSE: 11 Grade 9s
4) UCAT: 2360
6) Volunteered at charity shop and care home; 1 week work placement at a local GP practice
7) She attends a grammar school (state)
I’ve got a few questions please:
1) Will the uni or college send an acknowledgement letter after application? (long story short it took more than a month for my daughter’s school to check her application and provide reference, so her application was officially sent yesterday morning)
2) Roughly when an interview invitation will be sent?
Thank you in advance. 😊

My son's application went in yesterday. He had an e mail from Oxford today saying he should hear from the college directly by end of October. Interviews are early December. Your daughter will probably get an e mail from Oxford admissions today. Good luck.

Hi. Please can you answer two questions I desperately have? I applied to Oxford and submitted my application without a reference because as an independent candidate my referee was having some sort of difficulty with submitting my reference and the deadline was fast approaching. What should I do now? I’m sure Oxford will want a reference so do I tell the college that I applied to about this or do I get my referee to send it to them? Will this disadvantage me etc?

secondly, I applied to study law which is one of the subjects that has a centralised shortlisting process which means that the faculty shortlist applicants rather than the college and it’s the faculty that reviews your application first rather than the specific college that you applied to. So what does this mean for my application? Because I was confused as to why I didn’t receive a welcome email from the college that I applied to or a thank you email for having applied like I think is common for people who applied for subjects like history or any other subject really that doesn’t have a centralised admissions process. Is this normal? As I’ve only received a confirmation from the law faculty that they’ve received my application and that they’ve confirmed that the application is registered with the specific college that I applied to, but I didn’t hear from that specific college.

This is a bit complicated because how am I supposed to sort out the referee issue? If law admissions are centralised and my college is not directly dealing with the shortlisting process? Do I get my college to send it to the faculty?

Please answer Scotney or anyone else informed about this matter.

Well you definitely did the right thing submitting your application on time.Is your referee ready now as this needs to go in asap.
Unless someone who actually knows what to do replies contact your college admissions department and ask them where to send the reference.
Also please create a username so we can remember who we are helping.I am calling in some other helpers to see what they think.
