Chemical engineering university options, which choice is better?

Hi guys,
I’m currently a sixth form student in need of dire help. I intend to do chemical engineering and my firm choice is the university of Edinburgh, which only requires AAA. However, my choices for insurance are Birmingham (A*AA or AAAA), Nottingham (AAA) and Manchester (A*AA). All of these have an industrial year. Since the grade requirements for them all are either higher or matching the firm offer, I’m not sure what to pick.

The UCAS deadline is soon and I have no one who I can discuss this with. Please help :frown:

Congratulations to your offers.

To be blunt, you practically can insure any uni because it practically makes no difference. Hindsight, one should choose unis with a wide spectrum of entry requirements in UCAS application. Maybe the teachers should have advised.

Don't drag on and look ahead. Good luck.

As above, at this level of Uni, it is not going to have any meaningful impact on your graduate prospects - so, you need to pick an Insurance that a) you would still be happy to go to, and b) is a realistic back-stop if you miss your Firm.

Hello @Calculatorhead!

Congratulations on your offers!

I would give the academic programs from different universities a good look to see if the modules and the course structure are attractive to you in the event there is an issue with your firm choice. Likewise, researching about the surrounding areas (transportation, ammenities, etc) could also be another variable that could you take into account.

All the best,
Abian.

Hey there,
My school allowed us to participate in engineering competitions that at national. For example, I did EESW and the Davidson Inventors competition. These two examples are team based though so it would also depend on if there’s anyone else who would want to compete with you (the more people, the less work per person). That’s what I mainly focused on for mine as it went pretty well for us.

If you do any additional qualification projects related to your choice of degree that is useful too as it kind of shows you are interested in this outside of just school.

You can also do olympiads like physics and chemistry olympiads if you can take them. Any other activities, like additional maths courses (such as learning maths from STEP or additional reading). In addition to this, I currently help run 4 clubs (various roles) and I’m a student council member and house captain. The extracurricular don’t matter as much as activities like competitions and experience but it’s useful to show some soft skills like leadership, communication etc.

You’ll probably notice you’ve done a lot more than you expected by the time you write your personal statement. If the university offers an interview, you can kind of just further explain all of these.

Sorry for the long paragraphs haha

Pragmatically they are all very similar, id give the slight edge to Nottingham but in general i would go visit them all and choose your preferred institution.
