Should I defer or apply year after?

I'm applying uni through UCAS now. I'm planning to take a gap year before uni. However my teacher suggested me to apply uni for 2025 September then defer it. UCAS does offer a option to let me choose to apply at 2026 September. So I'm confused of which year to apply. It's 23 May now. Would it increase the difficulty of deferring my place?

Did your teacher tell you what to do if you changed your mind about which university or what to study during your gap year?

If you are looking to start in September 2026, you can defer your current application if you are set on where to go and have an offer, or you can reapply when UCAS reopens in September (I am coming to the end of my gap year and this is what I did as I wanted to apply elsewhere) and I can't see any difference between them.
If you haven't already applied now, your choices will be limited to those open for UCAS Extra which is open until July 4th. Personally, I found reapplying in September useful as I already had received my grades.
Hope this helps!

Do you realise that the majority of courses closed in January.
