what do you do to make money

Hi there,

There any many ways to make money during your time at university!

For me, being a student ambassador has been the most enjoyable way to earn while studying. The flexibility it provides is fantastic, and I enjoy working at Open & Applicant Days, making digital content, and meeting prospective students. You university may also have other opportunities, such as working in the dining hall, contributing to research, or working in the library.

During my final year, I also worked part-time at a supermarket. I found they were also very understanding of my academic commitments, making it easy to juggle in my busy schedule.

Some students also find work as tutors, which is a great way to showcase your strengths as a student!

I hope this helps,

Hi @limitless_vi

I work as a Student Ambassador, at Lancaster it's a zero-hour contract so it works really well around my studies and offers a huge range of shift opportunities - including working on TSR! Many people I know work at the bars on campus, the SU nightclub, other food places around the campus/city, or various supermarkets. Most jobs associated with the university will be flexible around your timetable as they recognise you're a student. I've also met people who have jobs where they control their own hours, for example as an online tutor or running a small business on Etsy!

There are usually jobs on campus in cafes, shops etc, and one-off opportunities like helping at Open Days, Graduations etc. And of course there are jobs in the local town/city. Uni careers services usually help advertise these to students. Examples :
JobShop | Students Union UCL
Part-Time, Casual and Vacation Work | Careers and Employability Service | The University of Aberdeen
Job Vacancies | Jobs in Meadowhall Sheffield

what do you do to make money

Hi @limitless_vi

Like the previous 2, I am also a student ambassador at uni and I find it is a great way to make money whilst studying at uni. I got my role through Unitemps and the work is very manageable and does not affect any of my uni work or social life at uni! I am involved in things such as answering questions like this on various different platforms and I can also be involved in the open days and applicant days when they come up! This current role is only 5 hours a week so it is nice and chilled and I can do it from anywhere along as I have access to the Internet!

Some of my friends at uni and people that I know on my course have transferred from their jobs back home to work at a store close to uni so that is another way you could make money or if you don't have a job back home then I am sure there will be a cafe or supermarket etc that you will be able to secure a job at!

Good luck with uni, I hope this response has helped. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hiya @limitless_vi
Aside from getting a part-time job at the local pub or retail store there are a couple of flexible part time jobs universities tend to offer. Like what the others have mentioned, joining a student ambassador scheme usually pays pretty well and offers flexible working hours while opening up a variety of different event base, admin or marketing type of work opportunities. If you are available, I would head down to your career services team to see if there are any other type of part time work your uni offers such as working in the library, reception or helping out behind the student union bar. If not you can always check out your local highstreet to see if anyone is hiring. I hope this helps 🙂

Hi @limitless_vi

Some fab suggestions from everyone so far!

If you're wanting a way to make some extra cash, you can always try selling some of your unwanted items on sites like Vinted. I always have things leftover towards the end of the academic year that I no longer need or want, so I try to sell them on and I usually get a bit of extra cash in my pocket. It's not necessarily a regular income like a job may offer, but it can be good to earn some money on the side and doesn't require too much commitment.

Hope this helps. 🙂

what do you do to make money

Hi there,

There are lots of ways to make money at uni!

As others have said, working as a student ambassador has been a great way for me to make money and has been really flexible. There are also other campus jobs which people do too, such as working in the cafes, library etc so maybe have a look into these and see if there are any that you would like to do and apply to them.

Some of my friends work in bars and pubs which seems to be a good option for students. They often have weekend and evening work which would fit around your studies too.

Supermarkets are a good option too - a couple of my friends have worked in these and you can often try and transfer home over the holidays which is really helpful!

I hope some of this helps 🙂

Hey there,
My name is Siobhan and I'm a third-year student at the University of Central Lancashire. This is a great question and as many have said already said, being a student ambassador is a great way get some money when you’re at uni, but here are a few more tips that I would recommend looking at/considering:

Zero-hour contract jobs: Balancing work with university can get overwhelming, especially during exam season when deadlines pile up and clash. That’s why I would recommend looking for a zero-hour contract job, as it offers the flexibility to choose shifts that fit around your academic schedule.

Bank jobs: On the same note, bank jobs are also a good option which is another form of a zero-hour contract but more for a healthcare setting. If you are doing a healthcare related degree, then this can be a great way to get experience and understanding of a how healthcare works.

Career fairs: See if your university has a career fair and if so when this is. Typically, loads of local services come looking for students to work with them and are more understanding that you will have work to do as well. See if this info is available on your uni website/page.

Career advisors: Most universities should have a career advisor team who can help you write CV’s and teach you how to look for local jobs that are suitable to what you are looking for.

Hope this helps and good luck with your job hunt! If you have any more questions just let me know as I am more than happy to help!

what do you do to make money

Hi there,

I'm currently in my second year studying law at university while also working. There are many opportunities available within university. The most popular choice of work at university is the role of a student ambassador which include roles such as doing campus tours supporting events such as Open days and events for prospective students. There are other opportunities such as working at the university shop and coffee pod. Working within university is a great opportunity as most roles are zero-hour contracts and therefore flexible and can be adjusted according to your schedule, making sure your education is prioritised.

I hope this helps!
