I am getting a postgraduate student finance loan for tuition fees

Am I eligible to apply for a maintenance loan for my course and living costs?
A postgraduate loan is a flat fixed amount paid to you to use as you wish. It’s up to you to budget the loan to pay fees and living costs.

Thank you for your reply, I was asking if i can apply for a maintenance loan as the postgraduate loan I received is still less than the tution fees of my Master course, which means it is not even enough to cover the tution fees. Added that, my University is at a different city than mine that will need a travel everyday/5 days a week and this will cost me plus living costs as well. I really feel frustrated and overwhelmed.

I’m afraid not. The pgl is a flat rate. If you need it to cover fees and living costs then the expectation is that you will find a university charging lower fees and/or study part time to allow you to work alongside your studies.

I don’t believe it worked that way in my case. I first had to enrol on the course and then contact Student Finance to explain my situation and request their approval—rather than the other way around.
This course is mandatory by government standards in order for me to qualify in my profession. It is a full-time programme and cannot be altered or adjusted based on personal preference.
Thank you again for your help 😊

What course are you taking?
Some postgraduate qualifications are eligible for undergraduate funding and aren’t funded through a postgraduate loan.

I would greatly appreciate any help in answering my question. I have been accepted for a Postgraduate Loan, which will only cover my tuition fees.
Is there any way to apply for a maintenance loan or access any other financial support typically available to undergraduate/Postgraduate students?
Student Finance England has been very supportive in approving my loan, but I am still concerned about covering the costs of living, transportation, and other essential expenses during the course.
Thank you in advance for any assistance or guidance you can offer.
Based on the information you’ve DMd me about your course it’s a PGDip and not a full masters and therefore not eligible for any student loans.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Just to clarify, I’ve already been approved for a Postgraduate Loan by Student Finance England for my course, which is recognised as eligible under their current criteria.
My initial question was about whether there are any additional sources of support for living costs—such as maintenance grants or other bursaries—not about course eligibility.
I appreciate any helpful insight on that point. Thanks again!

Hi there, if you are receiving Postgraduate Masters support from Student Finance England, then the maximum award that can be applied is: 2025/26 - up to a maximum of £12,858.00. this is a Non-means tested award, paid directly to the student and is a contribution towards total costs (can be used for fees or maintenance at the student's discretion). There is no further support hat we can apply. For further assistance you may speak to your university in relation to any discretionary support they may provide. Thanks, Stephen.

Thank you, Stephen that’s really helpful. I appreciate the clarification and will follow up with my university to explore any discretionary or hardship support they may offer.
