Bad GCSEs for uni

Hi I’m in year 12 I want to do accounting and finance at unis like Exeter, Nottingham, Surrey, York, Sheffield

However my GCSEs were really bad, I’ve checked the gcse entry requirements and I do meet all of them
My gcse grades were 766665554
6 in maths
4 in English language

Will I be put at a disadvantage
I currently do a levels

If you meet the stated requirements, you'll be fine.

For some courses at some unis, having weaker GCSE grades than other applicants might present an issue, but for Accounting and Finance at the unis you've mentioned, I suspect not.

The most competitive Unis will usually use your overall GSCE profile as part of the assessment of your application. This will be a relatively small % of the overall score, but it can be significant when they are faced with applicants with otherwise similar A level grade predictions etc.

Exactly how each Uni assesses applications is a good question to ask at Open Days.

Thank you, would you consider my profile weak for the unis I’m looking at

i still think u will get the course tho but u will be put at a disadvantage cuz i feel like a lot of applicants applying for accounting courses will have a 9 in maths but also a good grade in further maths gcse

Email those Unis and ask - or just ask Admissions staff at Open Days etc.

Hi there,

I've just had a look at the requirements for Accounting and Finance at all the unis you've listed and this is what I found:

Exeter:

4 in Eng Lang

5 in Maths

Nottingham

5 in English

6 in Maths

Surrey

4 in Eng Lang

5 in Maths

York

4 in Eng Lang

5 in Maths

Sheffield

4 in Eng Lang

6 in Maths

As you can see, you miss the requirements for one of them based on your English grade, but they might be more lenient depending on different circumstances, it would be worth maybe contacting their admissions or enquiries team to discuss this! As well, just keep looking around for other universities and keep all your options open - if you're a year 12 you have lots of time to decide and visit open days etc

Hope this helps!

As you can see, you miss the requirements for a couple of them, but they might be more lenient with your maths grade if you are taking maths for A-level, it would be worth maybe contacting their admissions or enquiries team to discuss this! As well, just keep looking around for other universities and keep all your options open - if you're a year 12 you have lots of time to decide and visit open days etc

Sorry I misread your OG post as a 5 in maths! I've corrected my above post now as it was just Nottingham uni you would miss out on with your Eng Lang grade!)

There are a lot more options around though that will have the requirement of a 4 for English so just keep looking around on UCAS

Remember that you can also resit GCSE English Language in Y13 to get the grade you need - its normally very straightforward, just talk to your school. This would not disadvantage your application, and any offer would just include the required GCSE grade as an extra condition.

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering applying to York!

The A level entry requirements for our BSc Accounting and Finance course are AAB, and a 5 or above in GCSE maths so you meet the requirement there. I'd say, depending on your predicted A level grades, you stand a good chance of getting an offer from us, and your GCSE maths grade shouldn't affect your chances 😀.

I hope this reassures you! If you've got any questions about our courses or what it's like to live and study in York, feel free to add any questions in this thread.

To help you narrow down your university options, I'd recommend visiting your choices at an open day if you can. Our summer Open Days are coming up on 21 and 22 June, and we'll be announcing our dates for our September Open Days soon. You can book your place at our Open Day on our website.

Best wishes!
