Best Universities for History and Criminology

I am supporting my daughter in looking at which universities might be best for her to study History and Criminology. If anyone has any feedback they can give me to help with this decision making process, that would be really appreciated.
Many thanks, Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

I’m currently a Master’s student in the social sciences at Liverpool John Moores, having completed my undergraduate degree at York. Some of my peers studied Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University and had really positive experiences.

One of my peers said it includes frequent guest speakers from various sectors, which kept lectures engaging and attendance high. There are also great opportunities for fieldwork, both in the UK and internationally. Instead of a traditional dissertation, she completed a final-year research project in Amsterdam, exploring graffiti as a form of political expression and its links to vandalism, freedom of speech, and resistance. She recently secured a job in local government in Wales, working in regeneration, so the course clearly offers strong career pathways too.

Here’s the link to the Criminology BA course at LJMU if you’d like to explore further: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2025/31520-criminology-ba-hons

There’s also a video led by the programme leader with more detail just type “Criminology” into this link (no login required): https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/on-demand/login

I don’t know as much about the History course, but Liverpool has a rich and important history, including its role in the transatlantic slave trade and as the home port of the Titanic. Plus, Liverpool has the largest number of museums outside London, which I imagine makes studying History especially interesting: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2025/30495-history-ba-hons

Our next open day is on 20th June 2025, which could be a great chance to attend subject taster sessions and get a feel for the campus if interested: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/undergraduate-open-days

Wishing your daughter the very best in making her decision.

Kind regards,

Megan (LJMU Postgraduate Student Rep)

Hi Megan....thank you so much for really helpful reply and for taking the time to put so much detail in what you've written.
Liverpool is one of the Universities and courses that Abi has in her current top 3...so your input is really valuable.
Thank you again, so much.
Best wishes,

Hi Suzanne,

So pleased I could help. As a student, I’ve found Liverpool to be a really safe, lively, and welcoming place. If you have any more questions about student life, feel free to ask—I’m happy to share what I can.

Kind regards,

Hi Megan,

Thank you so much for your last message.
That is really helpful to have your thoughts on how it is to be a student in Liverpool as well.

I am sure Abi will have some questions for you...she is going to be a bit more research on the University...then any more questions will hopefully be more "informed"....

Thank you again for your help and offers of support too!

I hope you enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend!
Suzanne
