Southamton or Monash?

Can someone tell me which one has more advantages when applying for a master's program in the UK, the US, Canada and Germany?

Both universities offer a 3-year undergraduate program in Computer Science.

The University of Southampton offers an honours degree and is ranked 80th in the QS World University Rankings. Its name may also be more familiar to some people.

Monash University offers an ordinary degree but ranks higher—37th globally.

Which factor do universities in these countries value more: an honours degree, a higher global ranking, or a more familiar name?

Thank you!

Monash is in Australia - not the US, Canada or Germany.

Is this question about a postgrad Masters or an undergraduate degree. Australian undergrad degrees are always 3-year without Honours and you would need to to do the extra 'Honours year' to add that to your degree. Its just a different degree structure to the UK where all degrees are described as 'Honours degrees'.

Btw, the difference between these two Unis is negligible. Both are excellent and world-class. It comes down to which course you prefer (look at the detail), the cost (not just tuition fees), and where you are going to feel most comfortable. Only you can decide this.

What I meant was I'm looking at two undergraduate program offers now, one from Monash Australia, the other one is from Southampton UK.
But my goal is to go for a master's program in one of these countries after I graduate: Germany, Japan, Ireland, Canada...
So I was wondering, which program might have advantages when applying for a master's program, Monash that has a higer ranking (I don't want to study a fourth year for a honours degree), or Southampton that provides a honours degree by default.
Thank you for your answer

Either will be fine - both are excellent Unis with a solid academic reputation. If you were applying for a postgrad Masters in the UK or the EU, you would be expected to have an Honours degree with either a First or 2i so the extra year in Australia could make that more expensive. Another thing to bear in mind is that the academic year in Australia is March/Dec, in the UK its Sept/June - and you need to consider the timing of how you would then progress to a Masters degree (usually 12 months long) possibly in the alternative system. Also - where do you intend to work, what sort of career etc are you aiming at after this Masters degree.

Hi IW23,

This is an exciting decision to be making and it's great you're thinking of all the angles. McGinger's right, both universities are world-class, which makes this a hard (but nice) dilemma! To add to the questions McGinger's said to think about: where would you prefer to spend three (or four) years at university? Have a think about the towns and cities, and campuses etc to see where you'd be living. Which one suits you more?

Also, since you know what you want to do at Master's level, keep that goal in mind and keep working back from there. Going to Southampton would save a whole year, like McGinger said, so another Q: what are the entry requirements for the exact master's courses you want to study? Could you check the uni websites to see if they mention Honours degrees? If not, could you send them emails to see if they accept normal degrees? This could help with your pros and cons list.

I hope that helps a little, and just to chuck in there - Southampton's great!
