really conflicted on career/degree options!! astrophysics v biology

so i've really been switching my mind up about which degree i take, my main idea for a career for a few years has been astrophysics as i'm super interested in it, i've read some books and they've solidified my interest in this career. however since starting year 12, i've really struggled with a level physics and it's really put me off the idea of taking physics further. i know i can definitely improve and put the effort in to get good grades so that's not so much the problem, i've also been thinking about the actual career opportunities afterwards. i know that for such an academic degree you usually need a phd to get access to the actual jobs but even then i've heard theres not much job security as well as it being a very competitive industry. so that's when i started looking at other options and i'm also interested in biology, i'm not too sure what i'd like to specialise in but i quite like the idea of microbiology. i do think biology will have a more secure job industry as well as it probably being easier than astrophysics.
i genuinely don't know what to do as i really like the idea of studying both, has anyone got any experience with choosing between degrees, or perhaps any experience with astrophysics or biology and the job markets??

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about your degree choice, especially when you're passionate about more than one subject.

Just to flag if you're considering Astrophysics, most universities will require A-Level Maths alongside Physics. It’s worth thinking about whether you enjoy and feel confident in Maths too, as that could help guide your decision.

It might also help to explore the course content in more detail. University websites break down the modules and often include information about graduate employability prospects. For example:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/subjects/biological-sciences
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/subjects/astronomy

You can also check out on-demand content like course introductions from lecturers here:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/on-demand/login just search for the subject you’re interested in (no account needed).

Another great way to get a feel for the courses is by attending open days, subject tasters, or speaking to current students through platforms like Unibuddy.

You might find it helpful to create a pros and cons list for each option you could even rate aspects like enjoyment of subject, confidence, and future career options out of 5 to get a clearer picture.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with your university applications!
