Hi there! I study International Relations and Arabic at SOAS and completed a year abroad in Jordan—so if you have any questions about languages or studying overseas, feel free to ask!

SOAS’s Linguistics programme is a fantastic choice, especially if you’re interested in exploring languages and cultures beyond Europe and the English-speaking world. The department specialises in linguistic diversity across an unparalleled range of languages across Africa, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Australia, the Pacific, and more.

Graduates from SOAS’s Linguistics department not only gain linguistics and cultural expertise but also develop strong skills in critical analysis, communication, and problem-solving, which are valuable in any career. For example, you can read this blog to see how SOAS Linguistics alumna, Karolin Abbas, applied her degree across different fields: "I’m driven by a desire to fix problems": A SOAS grad’s career journey.

If you pair Linguistics with a language, your year abroad will be compulsory (in a country where your chosen language is spoken). But even if you don’t, SOAS offers optional year-abroad programmes across all subjects, which you can apply for in your second year. We have partner universities worldwide, including Sciences Po, Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Australian National University and many others—you can explore the full list here: SOAS Year Abroad Partners.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi!
I study Linguistics at University of Southampton! We have a strong languages and linguistics department with a pretty big range of languages available to study - you can study one or multiple languages alongside linguistics! I study English + Linguistics but I'm also taking Spanish modules - the courses are super flexible and you can adjust your degree to whatever you want to study!

We have some Open Days coming up soon, you can come chat to professors and current students in the department and find out more about the courses and languages you can study here. Feel free to browse our courses in languages and linguistics if you're still unsure about which language is right for you!

Good luck on your university journey!

Hey, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in a degree in linguistics (with a language)!

The University of Sheffield's School of English is amazing. I came here for my undergraduate degree in English (Literature) and subsequently stayed on for my Masters and now my PhD because the department is so warm and welcoming with so much support and great modules! I also know people who are supervised by linguistics lecturers and they say they are so helpful and knowledgeable! 😀

At University of Sheffield we offer single honours (Linguistics) where you would have the option to take language classes as one of your optional modules. We also offer a dual honours degree in Linguistics and Modern Languages & Cultures BA. In this course, you’ll study the inner workings of language, whilst at the same time applying this knowledge in your study of either one or two modern foreign languages. 🤩

Some great reasons to choose this course include our teaching staff who are experts in a wide range of areas: 90% of our research is rated world-leading by the latest Research Excellence Framework and you’ll find this research woven into their teaching, so your learning sits at the cutting edge of the subject.

There's also the option to study abroad for a year. Here is the link for this course if you want to take a look. ✈️

Equally, if you have any questions about the School of English or the University of Sheffield, please let me know and I would be more than happy to help!

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😄
