EPQ- Is it worth it?

I'm going into Yr12 and I'm thinking about doing an EPQ. I am doing Applied science Btec and I want to do an EPQ to further my qualifications but i don't know whether its worth doing. I'm thinking on doing the topic institutionalised racism in education for it.

What degree subject are you aiming at, and at what sort of Unis?
And what are your BTEC grade predictions?

Are you gonna apply for uni in the UK specifically or branch out a bit as an EPQ can also help for irish applications for example - i'd reccomend though only doiing it on a subject you actually are interested in otherwise it is really hard and long

You don't need an EPQ. It wont make any difference to a Healthcare application.
Focus on your BTEC - and getting relevant 'caring' work experience.

Manchester doesn't offer radiography. Do you mean Salford? Use the following search tool to find approved courses:

If you have a topic you want to write about and would enjoy researching, go for it. It was really fun to do and taught me things about academic writing, but had no huge benefits apart from that.

Hey there,
My name is Siobhan and I’m a third-year student at the University of Central Lancashire. I ended up doing an EPQ in Sixth Form and here are some pros and cons that I found from doing so.

Pros:

Can help you get prepped for the academic skills needed for uni as you either have to do a 5000-word essay or 1000 word and an artefact

You can write about it on your personal statement about how you have gained researching and organisational skills

Gives you confidence and independence in your independent work which can help with the transition to university

Some university may count it towards your offer if it is related and applicable to the degree (Check with each university first)

You end up with a qualification that you can put on CV’s due to the transferable skills

Can offer you chance to do research and present on a topic you’re passionate about

Cons:

It can take up time during your A-Levels/BTEC and if you are doing a BTEC this might be harder to manage with exams and coursework throughout the years. I did 3 A-levels and BTEC and did find it quite challenging managing my coursework and EPQ deadlines too as they always seemed to happen at the same time.

Like I said before, some universities may not accept it towards your offer. I am doing physiotherapy and my offer was UCAS points based, not set grades, so I asked the course lead if my EPQ can help my application and because my EPQ was psyhology related they said no.

If you are applying for radiography and due to how competitive it is to be an AHP, your desired uni may be looking more for work experience rather than an EPQ. Therefore, if you have extra time, it might be more beneficial to do healthcare experience instead of an EPQ

I would have a think this summer about your application and speak to a school EPQ lead or career advisor if you can about what you think is best going forward when applying to uni. Sixth form/college is a big change and the workload will increase so see if you would manage with your time keeping and prioritisation.

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions 😊
