hiii, I am currently y12 and would like to apply for a deferred year for dentistry as I am currently an international student and I need at least 2 more years to obtain a home fee status, which is more financially preferable to me. May I ask if anyone has done it before and how does a deferred year work? Do i still apply ucas, do my ucat and my interview, then keep the offer till the next year? And also, may I ask dental students what you did during ur deferred year? Thanks!!

Hi @bludolphin

Completely valid reason to defer your uni place and deferring can give you some breathing space. I deferred my original uni place before actually changing my mind completely and reapplying to a different uni and course for the following year instead - so there's a few ways deferrals can work.

You can apply for deferred entry when you first send off your UCAS application, but it's important to contact the unis you're applying to first to check that they're happy to receive your application for deferral.

You can also submit your UCAS application normally and later defer your course after you've applied or even after you've received your offers, but again, this is up to the university to approve or decline the deferral.

In either case, you will need to contact the unis to check if they approve your deferral. The easiest way to do this would be to call them, and have your reasons for deferring ready too in case they ask for more details.

I hope this makes sense and helps you out. 🙂
