Accounting and finance degree

Hi I’m in year 12 right now, deciding what uni options

I want to study accounting and finance but what decent universitites would you recommend
I do economics politics and BTEC IT
My GCSEs were quite poor
I got a 76 in science, 6 in maths history and Spanish, 5 in economics computer science and literature and a 4 in English language
I do meet the gcse requirements for rg unis such as Exeter York Nottingham but my GCSEs were quite poor tbh

I’ve been looking at Surrey but is that a decent uni?

The usual advice for your 5 UCAS choices is :

1 choice just above your predicted grades - one grade and not in a vital subject.

3 choices at your predicted grades - these are you most likely offers.

1 choice well below your predicted grades as your potential Insurance choice.

You need to check each Uni website carefully to check the criteria they use for contextual offers - each Uni is different. And, check for any specific GCSE Maths / English requirement, again each Uni will be different. Does the course include any sort of work-placement or study abroad - this adds enormously to your student experience and your graduate CV.

Go to Uni Open Days now. This is the best way of discovering what 'going to Uni' means. Listening to the subject presentations will show the differences between each course (always go to at least two different subject sessions), and just looking around and talking to students/staff will give you an idea of the flavour/feel of each Uni. This is how you choose where to apply to in the autumn - where the course feels right, and the Uni feels comfortable.

Hi there:wavey:

It's great to hear that you are considering studying with us here at the University of Nottingham!

For our Finance, Accounting and Management BSc, the 2025 A Level entry requirements are AAA and we make contextual offers at ABB, which is two grades lower than the standard entry requirement. To qualify for a contextual offer, you must have Home/UK fee status and meet specific criteria check if you’re eligible.

You will also need to meet the GCSE requirement of Maths 6 (B) or above and English Language or Literature 4 (C) or above.

Please do note that this information is subject to change so we would encourage you to get in touch with us closer to the time to double check.

I'd also strongly encourage you to visit us on one of our open days as this would be a great opportunity to see if this course/ the University of Nottingham is for you! You can find information regarding these here.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
My gcse grades meet your requirement but they are still weak overall, can this be a disadvantage even though I meet them
Thanks

If you want to do accounting and finance there's no point going to university because if you get a job on a graduate scheme in accounting (once you graduate university) they will make you study for a professional qualification like the ACA so it will be another 3-4 years of studying. I'd say look into apprenticeships that offer you professional qualifications like the ACA instead of uni.

Apprenticeships are very competitive nowadays, and also, gaining qualifications such as the ACA does not take 3-4 years of studying, as students who study accounting-based degrees get a number of exam exemptions. Getting a degree apprenticeship in accounting will definitely be a very good opportunity if you can get made an offer.

Hi Thanks for the advice
My first aim is to get a degree apprenteship but they are competitive so uni is a backup plan, but I’ll still be applying to good unis just in case I don’t get a apprenticeship

Even with exemptions it's still another 2-3 years of studying. You will get exemptions from maybe some certificate level exams. You still have to professional level and advanced level and that's at least another 10 exams.

It 100% does? Like 80% of big 4 accountants come from the top 10 unis (LSE, Warwick, Imperial, Oxbridge, Durham, UCL etc.)

big 4 requirements are just a 2:1 not a target uni, theres loads of ppl that are at big 4 and didnt go to a target, target unis r helpful for landing internships placements etc, but obviously it would help tho.

Yeah - their requirements are a 2:1. If like 5% of uni students make up 80% of big 4 spots, how can u argue its not a massive advantage?
