Applying for medicine, I need some advice

Hiiii, I'm in year 12 planning on applying to medicine. My Gcse results are not the best especially since i started late and the curriculum were so my different from where i used to be before. My Gcse results were c in English language B in mathematics B in Biology and physics A in chemistry and the rest of my results were B's. But i have always wanted to be a doctor and i am scared that this won't be a good application when applying and i just finished my year 12 exams which were biology chemistry and mathematics which i think i flunked. I was thinking of resitting but i have noticed that some unis doesn't accept resits for medicine and dentistry (my second option). And i believe this is the point for applying for UCAT. I am not sure if i should sign up for it especially since i have a feeling my result won't go well so should i still book ??? or should i plan on applying for medicine with foundation year course and do more better on alevel for a potential better overall grade and do u need ucat for this course.

Hi!

There is definitely a lot to consider when applying for med!

Different universities prioritise different areas of your application when it comes to selecting for interview, so it is really key to look at their admissions policy/document, which is usually found when you search ' A100 *University Name* '

Here you can find Leicester's scoring document - this explains to you that UCAT and GCSEs carry 50% weighting each for interview selection.

I'm sorry that the exams didn't go how you hoped, I would recommend seeing what you can do to get the highest predicted grades possible, and focus on smashing the UCAT over summer! Take your time to research which universities favour your current strengths.

I personally did a foundation year, and thoroughly enjoyed it, so i would recommend researching which widening participation criteria you might meet in order to be eligible, depending on the medical school. For Medicine with Foundation Year at Leicester, you do need the UCAT.

Good luck!

You can try looking to gateway entries to medicine, foundation year medicine or applying through contextual offers if you fit the requirements, as they usually lower the grade boundaries for A levels. Thankfully there is more than one path for getting into med, so If you end up achieving lower grades it is not the end of it all 🙂 I hope you get to acheive your dreams

Hi there,

I absolutely agree with what Lindo has said!

I would also like to recommend the Medical School Council website (https://www.medschools.ac.uk/) as they have detailed information on each medical school's application criteria which is really helpful when you are trying to apply strategically and think about which medical schools will most likely accept you. They will have all the information about which medical schools accept resits and certain GCSE options. For example, I didn't do as well as I hoped on the UCAT when I was applying, so I made sure to research which medical schools had lower UCAT thresholds to maximise my offers!

Best of luck with applications,
Frankie (4th year med student)
