Best place for games art

Hi there

I'm currently struggling with making a choice whether to study game art at Manchester, Leeds or Nottingham. All of them look and sound great but I'm not sure which out of them seems to be the best place to go. I'm mostly interested in studying 2D digital art which all of them offer to some degree but I'm finding it really confusing if all the places are basically teaching the same thing or one has more benefits than the other. Then there's the question of if I'll like living there on top of that as well.

If anyone has had experience with this or has any advice that would really help out a lot.

Thanks
Have you applied and got offers from these 3?

Have you visited any?

What would you consider the pros and cons of each at the moment?

Yes I have offers and visited all of them so I don't need to worry about that.

Manchester and Nottingham are both further away than I'm used to but not ridiculously far. I do want to move out and have somewhere different to live, otherwise I would've stayed in Leeds which I've known all my life very well. I know a bit about Manchester but not Nottingham, although I don't know what either of them are like from a student point of view. Are there areas worth visiting etc. Both manchester and Nottingham have special built facilities for digital art whereas Leeds doesn't and the accomodation is closer as well, about 5-10mins from the university compared to leeds which is about 20mins. Also Manchester and Nottingham have more options for accomodation as well.

So far both MMU and NTU seem like the better option, it's just knowing which city is better to live in.

Manchester is probably most similar to Leeds if you’re looking for a similar city. Notts is a much smaller city.

Might be worth looking into accommodation in the city for second year onwards. Some cities have horrendous shortages of student housing which means the costs can be extortionate (or you end up with a really long commute).

Have you looked at the student union accounts of social media for both universities?

No I haven't yet. I've just been reaching out on other forums trying to get a better idea of what each place is like from a student's point of view
Assuming you mean Manchester Met, Leeds Arts, Nottingham Trent - All three courses seem to have 2D digital and 3D digital elements. It's unclear if any involve any traditional pen and paper drawing (seems like "no"). All three seem to involve some element of critical writing work.

Manchester has very few examples of student work available online, although you may have seen more work when you visited at open day. Notts has student work examples but they are all 2D (confusing for what is billed as a mostly 3D course...) and Leeds has plenty of student work examples but they aren't of particularly high quality.

I am interested if you saw student work in person at open days and which of them you thought had the best quality of work.

From what you've said you seem to be most interested in Manchester or Notts, so that helps narrow down your choices a bit.

I didn't really get to see much student work in person when I visited except for the same screenshots already on their websites. The closest I got was at Manchester where they had a game running, I'm assuming that was an end of year collaborative project and we got to try a bit of 3D texturing in their computer room as well. Leeds didn't show us much on their open day other than a bunch of workshops and printing rooms etc so it hasn't given me a lot of confidence.

So far Notts seem to be appealing to me the most based on the work on their website and the facilities they had on campus but I haven't had a chance to have a look around the city yet during their open day. I'm going there tomorrow to have another look. Their public transport seems to be very good and I can get back home quite easily even if it takes longer than Manchester
Hmm. Hasn't filled me with a huge amount of confidence either. Notts seems to be the safest bet from everything you've said. They also are Unreal Accredited - generally an indicator that someone with industry knowledge has at least reviewed the course content - and that typically also gives students access to Artstation Plus which is pretty valuable for external resources. (Leeds is also, but notably Manchester isn't).

Nice that you're going to have another look - will probably help you feel a bit less overwhelmed if you end up going there too.

Did you have any other offers/consider any other universities? Would you consider clearing? I appreciate you didn't want to go miles away but Staffordshire Uni and De Montfort Uni both offer great game art courses and aren't too far away from your other options. Appreciate it might be a bit too late for you to consider other universities at this stage though.

I had an offer from Sheffield and another from Leeds to do comic and concept art instead. Sheffield didn't really appeal to me as somewhere I'd want to live and the comic and concept art at Leeds didn't offer much variety compared to game art with careers or skills. I remember the equipment at Notts being fantastic when I first went to look. Manchester has similar equipment but it didn't blow me away as much compared to Notts despite having a dedicated building for digital art.

At the moment, it looks like Notts is likely going to be a first choice then Manchester as a second. If I absolutely can't cope living away and want to move back then Leeds would be a last resort, although I'm not sure how that all works if you don't like where you're living and want to change unis.

Sure, this seems sensible. I am not a huge fan of comic and concept art courses as (as you said) they generally offer poor employable skills.

I hope Notts works out well for you! Enjoy your time visiting there tomorrow.

If you decide you want to move back to Leeds you would need to apply for a transfer. They may give you an offer onto the 2nd year of the game art course there (which would typically require sitting out the rest of the year at the other university and passing the year at a minimum) or they might offer you (or you might only be eligible for, if you don't complete the first year of the other course) transfer onto the 1st year of the course at Leeds, where you would effectively start again as a fresher at Leeds, or they would reject the transfer application. Would depend on the conditions of the offer, if they decide to offer you a transfer. You can read much more in more detail about transfers in this thread: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1781424 if you're particularly worried about it.

Thanks so much, hopefully should be worth the visit and then feel more certain afterwards. I've done some research and it does seem more logical if I want to go visit other places in the UK during the holidays from Notts if I wanted to like London and Manchester so there's that benefit as well. Plus the accomodation looks pretty good too.

I'm wondering if the university will still be open to get brochures and more info, or if it will be off limits for the time being because of exams and whatnot.

It might be difficult when they're not technically open to the public - I would probably try the Student Union desk and see what they say - most other places will probably have pass cards needed on the doors and standing around might not yield much result! Feel free to let us know how your visit goes.

Hi again

The visit went much better than I thought! Had a look around the city centre and the student halls. Managed to speak to the both the student union and staff at the digital arts building as well to help answer some questions I didn't get to ask. They even let me have a look around the entire building to see what it was like in person and gave some information about the course and building etc. Staff seem to be very focused on helping students throughout. It's definitely helped make me feel a lot more confident about the university and Notts in general so I think it's very likely going to be a firm first choice compared to the other visits I went on. They certainly know what they're doing it seems. Glad I was able to visit it again before deciding, otherwise I don't know what I would've done.

Glad to hear you had a good time and the staff on hand were happy to help! Best of luck on results day and hope you enjoy studying at Notts.
