Grey College Durham Offer Holders 2025

Figured I’d get the ball rolling with a thread for all of us heading to Grey College in 2025! It'd be nice to get to know each other a bit before freshers' week kicks off. I'm hoping this can be a place to chat, ask questions, find potential flatmates/course-mates, and maybe even plan a sneaky pre-term meetup or two during visit days!

Grey was not my first choice (not even ranked haha!), as I feel is the case for a lot of people, but I hope I'll grow to love it.

If you'd like drop a message with:

Your name (or nickname)
What course you’re doing
Any societies/sports you’re thinking of joining
Anything random to kick-start the convo!

Posting this anonymously for now because I’m not sure where I’m going yet, but I’ve also been allocated to Grey’s! It seems lovely and I hope it doesn’t change on results day if I end up at Durham.

Doing law and I’m definitely thinking of joining an informal/relaxed orchestra and the bouldering/rock-climbing society. I also want to try rowing and ballet, which sounds silly but it’s something I’ve always wanted to try : )

What about you?

That’s so exciting, fingers crossed it is Grey for you on results day!
Law sounds intense but proper interesting, we’d need people like you around when someone inevitably breaks a kettle in the shared kitchen and chaos ensues haha!
I’m doing psychology and anthropology, definitely want to get stuck into fencing (Durham apparently is a great getaway to go pro, and Grey is a very good college for sports I've heard), and I’m debating between rowing (classic Durham rite of passage?) and something completely rogue like the debating society. Who knows, we’ll see what sticks!

Have you visited Grey yet or just rolling with what you’ve read online like me? I've visited Hatfield which was my first choice but didn't get around Grey sadly! And do you play an instrument already for orchestra or just fancy trying it out?

Ahaha hopefully no one breaks a kettle and needs unofficial legal advice for a student 😅 your course sounds fascinating btw!! I know nothing about it but it sounds like the study of the human brain along with the evolution of human culture.

Fencing sounds so cool, what? I didn’t even know a fencing club existed. Do you already do fencing? It sounds insane. Also, you mentioned debating which reminds me that I completely forgot about all the academic societies! I definitely want to join the Bar society and get very involved in mooting (maybe debating to a lesser extent). Agreed that rowing seems like a rite of passage, but at the same time, it looks very time consuming.

I’ve not visited Grey yet. I only got the chance to visit like 4 colleges on the open day and I didn’t go to any offer-holders day (because I live quite far from Durham). I play violin and percussion in a few orchestras but imo auditioned orchestras are far too intense, so I want to escape and hopefully be involved in something far more chill at uni. Like I love music, but I don’t love the culture in serious orchestras.

hi there thought i’d join in! i got allocated grey too (chad’s first- typical), i was really disappointed at first but thought that uni is what you make of it, it doesn’t look too bad by any means just a bit vanilla-esque. i’d be doing history undergrad but still undecided between durham, st andrews and edi. if i go greys ill just throw myself into all the socs i can manage from sports to music and drama and some cheeky academic ones would be fun, id love to try things ive never done before and carry on some of my hobbies (i think thats a bit benefit of durham how u can just try anything within the college!). i think another benefit from the likes of a smaller bailey college is the size- more people more socs more fun!

I ranked Grey as second after an aspirational Bailey (castle). I got Grey and I am chuffed to bits, by far in my opinion the best hill so wouldn’t be put off: gowned, shared room usually max 1 term, bar just got redone, one of cheapest for drinks on hill and reasonably close to the main campus. YES Mary’s is closer and has very similar things and they were my third choice, but their bar is direly boring and Greys looked so much more fun and social, especially with the added Collingwood rivalry.

Absolutely agree with everything you've said, Grey looks really good, it just doesn't stand out to me yet? I do think that compared to others on the hill it is more balanced in terms of socs and sports at the college level, and that there is a fair bit of choice. (side note: if anyone in this thread is disappointed with clubs at Grey, this is the link to the page with all socs at university level which as you know can be joined independently of whatever college you have been allocated - https://www.durhamsu.com/groups)

Very jealous of your degree choice, the course at Durham looks like one of the most beautifully structured ones out there! Have you been to St Andrews yet? I'll be going at the end of this week and am really excited to see it in person

The Greyhound is a massive point in favour of the college, so many music events hosted throughout the year, great prices and hiring is also quite frequent. I'm curious, I've not heard of the rivalry with Collingwood yet, I assume it is at sports level since the two are so close? haha

ooh this makes me feel a lot better, i was going to rank mary’s as i loved the architecture vibe- but i saw the bar and (planning to spare a fair bit of time there haha) decided against. i’ve seen pics of greyhound before renovation and looked perfectly great, large space, so that’s added bonus it’s been updating too! the socs really are a selling point for grey.
what will you be studying?

And also same, as much as I am going for the academic the college bar is probably far to important to me than it should be lol 🤣

thanks for the link that’s really helpful! anthropology sounds so cool btw, really hope to pick up some modules in it it’s so interesting. i think all in all grey is a great compromise- like it’s been said, it’s gowned with a lovely hall (granted not as inspiring as castle ofc but i think it holds up its own) so got that part of the bailey aspect, but with the size and scope of a hill in social aspect, the size of the greenery surrounding by accom makes it feel very communal imo.
i have visited st andrews twice! it’s a lovely town with beautiful architecture, and the beaches are a huge selling point for me. i’m just reserved about its size- i’m a bit concerned it’s just too small for me. compared to durham’s societies both uni wide and college im not sure at andrews could compare imo. the union looks fine enough- just what you would expect of any uni union tbh if not a bit smaller, ive seen videos online of bops and they look fun enough. i’m quite extroverted and like a good party, and the size of the town limits the experience of this i think (i think 3 clubs?). from what i can gather there’s an abundance of house parties which i vibe with however and ofc a lot of pubs. im quite into drama and i think durhams has a lot broader scope from what i can gather. also i think for my course st andrews is a bit better- tho really there’s not much difference as durham is ofc prestigious too.
durhams collegiate system just really appeals to me socially- like a built in home ready there i hope.
i hope you have a good visit!
im quite conficted if thats not evident haha 😂
also i don’t know if anyone knows but on yt there’s a grey channel and got some great videos on their previous balls and freshers weeks- just seems really welcoming and lovely!

My daughter is starting at Grey (unless things change, not sure how likely that is) in September (already has her A Levels). She's not especially happy about it as I think it was her 8th choice but I'll get her to come and read your encouraging thoughts. She'll be reading English & History but her great love is drama and acting.

I was at Grey 20 years ago. I wouldn't worry - it's an absolute blast. At its best if you get involved with as much as possible, in my opinion, but I know plenty of people who dodged college life and still had a great uni experience. Happy to answer any Durham questions as I often drop back for a visit.

hello! keeping this anonymous just in case i’m reallocated. i’m starting my LLB in september and i was allocated grey, which i’m super happy about! i’m thinking of joining the law and history societies, although i will definitely have a look into some more leisurely ones haha.

out of curiosity, does anyone know how long after results day we get our final allocations? i looked for the final allocation date for last year just to get an idea, but couldn’t find anything :/

My daughter has just received a Congratulations and Welcome to Grey! email from [email protected], i'm guessing that this is official confirmation of her place in Grey College.
