Russel group universities

Hi,

I was wondering how big of a difference does it make to employers and those who read your CV when they see a Russel group university? The one that I'm talking about specifically is Queen Mary in London. I'm trying to decide between Queen Mary and City St Georges.

Thanks

What do you want to do in the future? According to some knowledgeable people I’ve seen on TSR, it basically doesn’t matter.

So I've applied for Biomedical Engineering, I'm hopefully gonna do a masters in something to do with cancer medicine or something along those lines. So a Biomedical Engineer working on cancer machinery etc. All I hear about the main reason to study at QMUL is because its a Russel Group university.

It doesnt actually mean anything significant at all - whatever your school tries to tell you.
Its just marketing fluff thought up by the older Universities in the 1990s.

One thing that many young people miss when deciding where to study is not reviewing the quality of their degree course and the opportunities afterwards.

A uni could be relatively less known but it could have links to top employers and other unis with opportunities for internships, work experiences, placements or study abroad programmes. This would give a student a richer educational experience than another ‘top’ uni that is just a straight 3 years of rote learning.

In the end, the student with a wider learning could be more qualified for the job or other opportunities.

whats an easy way to check what links and connections a uni has? Their website and course information I would assume right?

Yes, i would start with those. Also look at some materials on social media like insta, youtube etc.

Also feel free to reach out to the unis to ask for information. Many would be happy to ‘brag’ about their links and graduate opportunities.

Hi @AA67,
Personally, attending a Russel group university does not necessarily make you more employable, as there are many great universities that provide excellent degrees that are not classified as Russel group. Employers are more likely to care about what you studied, what other interpersonal skills you developed at university and your grades over whether the university was a Russel group.
So, when deciding between the 2 universities think about which course you prefer, and which university you think will provide you with the best experience.
Hope this helps!
