Hi! I’m Anoosha, an MSc Earth Futures student here at the University of Glasgow. I also did my undergraduate degree in Geography here, so I’ve had the chance to experience Glasgow across all seasons, but spring and summer are definitely when the city comes alive in a different way.
One of my favourite things about studying in Glasgow is how green the city is. “Glasgow” comes from the Gaelic Glaschu, meaning “dear green place”, which couldn’t be more accurate. There are parks everywhere, each with its own character and charm. On sunny days, you’ll find students flocking to Kelvingrove Park, especially the iconic hill by the university, it’s the spot for catching up with friends or taking a break between library sessions. You’ll sometimes catch bandstand shows in KG, or even squeeze in a bit of tennis at the public courts.
The Botanics are another favourite of mine, especially the glasshouse conservatories, which feel like a tropical escape. Pollok Country Park is great for a weekend wander, and it’s home to the Burrell Collection (free entry!), and highland cows. There’s also Queen’s Park in the Southside, which hosts everything from local festivals to food markets, and is just around the corner from one of my favourite streets, Victoria Road. It's full of independent cafes, record stores, and some amazing charity shops, perfect for a day of neighbourhood exploring.
And of course, the music scene in Glasgow really kicks off in the warmer months. I’m heading to one day of TRNSMT this summer, but there’s loads of free music to catch too, street performers, pop-up events, and gigs in pub gardens all over the city. Whether it's King Tut’s, Mono, or some last-minute open mic night, you’re never far from live music here.
Day trips to Loch Lomond are super doable by train, and there are gorgeous country walks even closer. My go-to peaceful escape is the Kelvin Walkway, it winds right through the West End along the river and feels like a hidden green corridor in the middle of the city.
Glasgow in the spring and summer is honestly such a joy. It’s got this energy where everyone’s out making the most of the good weather (yes, we do get sunshine!), and the city feels both relaxed and buzzing at the same time. It’s a brilliant time to be here, especially as a student.
Feel free to ask me anything about life at UofG or living in Glasgow, I’m always happy to chat!
