Commuting to London

Hi, I live in Essex and will be commuting to uni in London this September, the uni is in zone 1 and I was wondering if there was anyone who commutes who can suggest the most affordable way by train. I know the railcard is good but I’ll be going from national rail to tfl. Should I get an Oyster card or just a direct card to zone 1? Thanks! ☺️

If you travel during peak hours a lot, sometimes a monthly travelcard that covers both your rail journey and zones 1-6 on TfL might be worth it. But for flexibility, Oyster + railcard combo usually works best. Have you checked if your rail line offers any special commuter deals?

Hiii, thank you for replying! ☺️ so I get a 16-25 railcard which is 1/3 off tickets and one of the train lines does an open return to zone 1 so I might do that as it’s 17£ a day compared to paying £20 to get a student oyster and then using that I’m not sure how much it costs to travel between zones but I think my return lets me travel within the zone anyway.
