Hey Natasha!

Yes, a Masters by Research (also known as an MRes) in Psychology (but also any other field) is typically a fully research-based degree. Unlike a taught master's (like an MSc or MA), which includes a mix of lectures, seminars, coursework and exams, the MRes focuses almost entirely on conducting your own independent research!

Here’s what that usually involves:

You’ll work closely with your project supervisor on a research project for the majority of the year.

There's usually very little to no coursework, maybe one/two research methods modules at most, depending on the university that you're applying for.

It’s ideal for students who are considering a PhD or research-based career, because it builds strong research skills, experience with academic writing, and possibly even publications. It gives you an insight into what a PhD or research-based career might actually be like!

If you're someone who enjoys independent work, data collection/analysis, and exploring a specific research question in depth, it can be a very enjoyable route! Just depends on the person and individual preferences 🙂

Hope that helps!!
