Failing an exam

I have recently failed an exam, which is something practical and is not like the 'normal' exam. I get a resit chance but I am really scared as this exam is pretty strict and almost no mistakes can be made. I failed it because of my careless. If I fail it again, I need to retake the whole year which is financially impossible for me (no loan available for me). Not sure if they would make a paper similar to the one I did or something would be changed. I can't really retake the year and I am not sure if I could pass it later since there is not much content that I can revise. My life will be ruined will I make other mistakes.

Hi!!

Failing an exam is a difficult thing to go through, so it's understandable to feel stressed. The most important thing is how you can bounce back, and not let the failure define you!

If you can, try and get as much feedback as possible, and use the feedback to guide your preparation for the resit. Try and keep calm by focusing on what you can control (your effort, work ethic and attitude!) , as the nerves/ pressure is what often makes practical exams more difficult to master than written exams.

Good luck!

it is a pass/fail exam with strict marking and that's why I am scared. It is hard to know even you are pass/fail straight after the exam cause a silly mistake is enough to fail everything. 😭

Hi there,

I understand how you feel - it can be hard failing an exams so I know this must be stressful for you.

I would say that it sounds like a good idea to revise as much as you can and give the exam your best shot. If you failed before because of being careless, if you make sure you do as much revision and practice as you can, I am sure you will be able to do it.

If you are worried or unsure, talk to your tutor about anything you don't understand. They are there to help you and will be able to talk you through any questions that you have so you feel more happy and confident with the content and can help you with any practice.

It's also a good idea to talk to your academic advisor too. They are there to hep you out with anything you need help with so you can talk to them about anything you are unsure about and they can help you.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy-SHU student ambassador.
