Hwsf vs Iclms

Heyy I got a conditional offer for both hwsf and ICLMS and I’m really not sure where to go. If there is any ICLMS student can u lmk how the school is like for u and it being quite new and how the environment is. Both are quite far- ICLMS is 1hr and 20 and hwsf is around an 1hr.

I’m planning to do maths, further maths, physics, chemistry.

Any advice for both school

Thanks in advancee

I study at ICLMS - currently in Y12 - and have loved it so far. The teaching quality is really good, and everyone is friendly. We've also got really good extracurriculars, including group projects that span a few months which you select out of 16 provided topics, personal projects - which if you do attend you'll see me present mine! - that are optional on anything you like as long as it's STEM related and masterclasses at the end of Y12 and start of Y13 that are related to either Maths, Physics / Engineering or Comp Sci depending on what you pick. I can't speak on hwsf, but I love it at ICLMS.
We also have problem solving classes for MAT and TMUA that we do every week, that have really helped me with entrance test prep.

Yeah we currently have help with writing our personal statements and can go off-site whenever you like. The school doesn't find us work experience, we do that ourselves, for work experience weeks.

hey cant speak for iclms but hwsf sucks absolute balls i’m sorry. some people love it for sure but a lot of us just despise it and think it was the worst decision we made. just too bloody stressful. stingy mfs with predicted grades too. tbh you’d fit in well and i think you’d genuinely love it if you’re a nerd (no offence) bc they cater a lot to that stuff. they do talks every week from an expert which is kinda cool ig? some networking opportunities. the teachers r mid. the senior leadership team couldn’t give less of a f*** about us tho or our mental health. they pretty much just say ‘tough. get on w it’. but again, if you’re very clever and can work hard then it’d be great for you. if you’re normal though and don’t always get A******s in every subject, maybe not the best. take w a pinch of salt though because i REALLY hated hwsf. defo check them out in the open days or smth tho or talk to other alumni… if you have any specific questions about anything to do w it pls lmk

sorry just wanted to add we get no freedom, detentions VERY often for every little thing like being late a couple times a term or uniform non conformance as if we are still little children. only 2 x 40min free periods a week in y12 and 4 in y13. not allowed out in break time (10:40-11:05) only allowed during lunch. in y12 not allowed out during free periods but you are allowed in y13. assemblies all the time (weekly one on monday, one on wednesday every month and occasional house assemblies)

they force you to do activities and join clubs and participate in stuff which sounds like it’s good i guess but it can be a drag esp when you’re just not interested and it’s unnecessary like we are adults now we can make our own decisions.

16h worth of homework a week. no sympathy. no one cares. no free time. too much work. too much stress. sometimes even when the teacher doesn’t have homework to give the class, they force themselves to come up with random bs homework for us to do regardless just to fill the quota of 4h hw per subject weekly

each class has maybe 20-30 people and in the year there’s about 500. we had exam week every term which we find really stressful. for predicteds for my year, they took either the average of our last two term tests OR the grade we got in our end of y12 mock. no negotiation. no predicting us one grade above the grade we got in y12 like literally every other school does. they changed it now though for the new y12s and they do like two sets of y12 mocks at the end of the year or smth.

for uni admissions we each got assigned a ucas mentor. some teachers r great but some are shite. we had like two meeting in the whole year with our mentor but if people were close to their teacher or rly wanted more help they would schedule more meetings. imo this was a rly nice idea but some of the teachers were rly unhelpful or never actually met with their students and yeah we could go to get advice from another teacher but this was slightly frowned upon by the school bc of the whole idea that all the teachers r busy so we shouldn’t randomly go to other teachers blah blah.

we do not have a work experience week. but if you rly need to do one during term time and there’s no other option, you can take some time off school if your attendance is already high. also i do have to admit they give quite a bit of support with finding work experience like there’s a teacher that jist bombards us with a million emails a week about opportunities and they rly do try to help everyone find a work experience if they didn’t manage to sort one out for themselves independently, whether it’s online or irl. and they do have like partnerships with some companies eg a law company where that company takes a few students every year for wex.

look, being completely fair, the school is good for achieving high grades because they rly push you. and it’s good for applications bc they rly do try to help. it’s just the stress of it all makes people crumble and end up not doing well in the end because the school is unforgiving. but i’ll be honest bc maybe it’s not fair to discourage you - if you can handle stress and work hard and manage many things at once and show tf up, then honestly you wouldn’t find it that bad

anymore questions pls lmk
