Applying for Medicine at Bristol with Access to HE

Hi,
I plan to apply for medicine at Bristol uni this September. I will be applying with an access to HE. I believe Bristol is my top choice so could someone please help me?

If you've ever applied to Bristol before or you are a Bristol student, please tell me what admissions look for? What do they love the most in an applicant? Please let me know any other important information. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi there

With an Access to higher education diploma there are no predicted grades. Bristol specify the units and grades they require from your 45 total and you need to meet or exceed that target to be accepted on to the course. Back when I did it they did not automatically offer an interview to people on Access to HE programs whereas I understand they will offer applicants from this course an interview (you still have to sit the UCAT and get the required grades, however).

My only advice is to approach the course with the same mindset I did: the approach that you're already at University and thus you will complete all the work and study with the level of commitment you think you will need for medical school. The entire course is designed to prepare you for the demands of degree level study and it was a great entry to medicine for me because I got to learn a heck of a lot of content that sure enough cropped up in medical school for real.

The Access to Bristol program, at least as I understand it, is a very different thing and is a University specific program that is offered to people in their region. Only a select number of people qualify for this and similar schemes aimed at widening participation. I understand Bristol have a number of other schemes or courses which may be called something else or operate in a slightly different way now but as I understand it, you would still need to sit the UCAT and obtain the expected A level grades for these.

No, I applied as a mature student. If you read the admissions part of the course page on their website it will tell you what they can or cannot accept. Failing that, email the admissions team politely and ask. They are normally quite quick to respond to queries after a few days.

The important thing about Bristol is that they select for interview only on your UKCAT score.
They check that your predicted grades etc meet their minimum requirements, and then its just on UKCAT score, they don't include your predicted grades in any scoring. So, for Bristol you/ really need to focus on UKCAT.

You apply whilst doing the Access course normally or you can apply the year after, you will need to let your tutor know about this though so they can provide the academic reference and help with your UCAS application.

Not all Universities put the same emphasis on GCSE grades. Choose those that don't require the grades you are discussing?

Bristol was one of the unis I applied to for VetMed - with A2HE, I was studying at the time so no results in hand.

Bristol guaranteed a place for A2HE applicants so I almost immediately was accepted after applying in October with a conditional offer of 15credits distinction in Chemistry units and 15credits distinction in biology, the remaining credits must be merit or above.

Bristol wasn’t my first choice so I ended up declining the offer, but it was nice to know I had an offer in hand given I was kept waiting until March to hear from the rest.

May I ask what was your ucat score and GCSEs if that’s ok because I have the results but I want or do medicine but it’s my maths since I have a 6 not a 7
