Fine Art Dissertation Help

I’ve taken a year out of uni after completing my second year - burnouts a hell of a thing. Anyway third year is looming and that means it’s dissertation time, but I’m doing a Fine Art degree (something I’ve realised I actually don’t like!!) So if anyone with experience knows how strictly “Fine Art” of a topic my dissertation has to be that’d be super helpful.

I’m really interested in Social Media and the way artists can utilise it for promoting and marketing artwork - small businesses, freelance illustrators, graphic designers and stuff like that. Is that something I can talk about for a FINE ART diss ??

I’m thinking I could compare to traditional art marketing and critique but I’m not 100% sure what would count as a case study. I’d love to talk about independent galleries and art spaces and maybe how social media allows artists to collaborate and connect - that “Starter Pack” trend for example is so cool to me. Seeing “real artists” stick it to AI was awesome.

Any and all tips would be appreciated,
Ta.
Are you sure your degree includes a dissertation? Most fine art degrees will have a final major project.

Hey @jashow04,

I study BA Fine Art and Art History at Kingston University London and had to complete a 5,000-6,000 word dissertation as part of one of my Fine Art modules this year. My dissertation combined art and economics, and used the structure of the primary and secondary art markets as a framework for critically analysing the relationship between art and its numerous economies. My case studies were primarily economic rather than fine art based, and I ultimately achieved a 78%, which I was very happy with!

Although I would definitely discuss your topic with your lecturers/dissertation supervisor first, I don't see why it wouldn't be accepted as a research focus. Due to its open-ended nature as a subject, Fine Art dissertations can encompass a lot of vastly different themes - I think your topic is a good mix of traditional fine art concerns and social media/marketing.

Hope this helps and best of luck with third year,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
