GCSE english language paper 2 aqa- Just had a small question

Heyyy guys,
I was attempting a past paper and it only occured to me to remember to ask this question now, but you know where it says,

Write a speech to be given at a meeting of your local council in which you argue your point
of view on this statement. (2023)

Write an article for a magazine in which you argue your point of view on this statement. (2022)

Like how one is a magazine and one is a meeting at a local council, how does that affect your answer? would it have any significant difference except maybe changing your tone in your writing to more formal for example?

Thank youuuuuuuuuuso much! <3

Hi, and yes it does significantly affect your answer as the marks for your ability to write an answer towards the audience comes under the 24 marks of the section, and knowing the audience you are writing to shapes your answer if that makes sense.

Like if it was a speech you are addressing the audience in front of you so it needs to be structured in a way that is convincing to them. Sorry if this is quite obvious but a speech needs to address the people directly using pronouns such as "you" and "we" to really get across that sort of persuasive tone, and using rhetorical questions to communicate with the audience would be persuasive to them as you are speaking to them directly in the moment which makes them take in your viewpoint and really think about it.

If it was a magazine/article a headline or title would be good to include, and im not sure if this is entirely correct but i have heard that including one gives you a mark (this may be wrong though).

Like you said about magazine, it would probably be less formal as a magazine is usually read for entertainment purposes. You would probably use a conversational and friendly tone when informing the readers. Whereas a meeting at a local council would be formal. If it was a meeting with a local council the question would most likely be about an issue that affects your area so you would need to be respectful but also passionate in your views. If you think about the people at a local council they're usually important officials or whatever, so you would need to structure your response so that they take it seriously. (So sorry if this is just a repeat of what you asked 😭)

But basically to sum up, the audience really does matter and it really changes how you write your answer - you would have to engage with the audience in a different way to make it convincing and compelling to them which is exactly what the mark scheme rewards. Even if your point may not be a very strong or relatable one you can still get high marks if it is persuasive to the audience.

Not sure how well this advice would work but whatever the statement is always think about who you are addressing and why your are addressing them. Are they listening or reading for a serious matter or for entertainment purposes? Are they important people or just the everyday average person?

I really hope this helps!!
