Possible grade roundup

In one of my modules i got 69.80 overall and i was wondering if its possible if i can ask my module leaders to round it up to 70% (a first)

Has anyone ever been in this situation and asked for your grade to get rounded up and has it worked or did the teacher decline

Hi there,

Universities have different policies for rounding up grades, so it would be best for you to go ahead and ask your module leaders. They will be knowledgeable of your university's specific practices.

It might be daunting to ask, but the worst they can do is say no. If they can round it up then it only benefits you further!

I hope this helps,

It’s not appropriate to try to boost grades. Your institution will likely already have a policy & they will almost certainly apply this if possible (and you may well find on your official transcript they round this up), however rounding grades as a personal favour is not fair, ethical or inline with academic integrity.

You should review your universities academic regulations, most universities do actually have borderline rounding rules and the borderline cases are reviewed in final year regarding overall classification.

Hi there,

First off 69.80% is an amazing result, especially in university grading where anything close to a First is a clear reflection of hard work and strong academic performance. It’s completely valid to be wondering whether that tiny margin could be rounded up, especially when you're so close to hitting that 70% First boundary.

Whether your grade can be rounded up typically depends on your university’s assessment and grading policies. Some institutions have strict rules around rounding (for example, they may only round if it’s exactly 69.95 or higher), while others leave a bit more discretion to module leader. It’s not unheard of for students to request a review when they’re very close to the next boundary. Sometimes, depending on the circumstances and academic judgment, it can go in your favour.

At universities like Salford, for instance, while students are encouraged to respect final grade boundaries, you’re also fully entitled to ask for clarity. You could start by reaching out to your module leader or programme administrator and politely ask whether the 69.80% can be reviewed or if there is any discretion applied. It’s worth asking if any elements of the marking allow for academic judgment or if borderline performance is reviewed at all. You won’t lose anything by asking, and it shows initiative and care about your academic outcomes.

That said, don’t feel discouraged if the answer is no. You’re still achieving a very high 2:1, a mark that’s respected by employers and postgraduate programmes alike. And being that close to a First consistently may also position you well for a First overall, especially if your other modules are strong.

If you’re unsure how to approach this, your academic advisor or personal tutor can also help. At Salford, every student is assigned a personal tutor to guide them through situations exactly like this. Your university is likely to have similar support, so don’t hesitate to use it.

No harm in politely inquiring, and regardless of the outcome, you should be proud of how well you’ve done 💫
