How do you cope with stress during exam season?

Hey everyone,

With exam season in full swing, I wanted to start a thread to talk about how we all deal with stress, burnout, and feeling overwhelmed. Especially as a final year student, it's been such a tough time of year, and I know I'm not the only one struggling to stay focused and keep anxiety in check.

I know I’ve personally had moments where it feels like there’s too much to do and not enough time, and that can easily spiral into stress, anxiety, or just pure exhaustion. So I wanted to ask: How do you manage it? What helps you stay calm and grounded when everything feels like too much?

Do you have any go-to strategies, routines, or little habits that make a difference? Maybe it’s something simple like going for a walk, using a study planner, taking breaks, or even just venting to a friend.
Here are a few things I’ve been trying lately:

Using the Pomodoro Technique 30 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. It stops me from cramming non-stop and helps my brain stay a bit more fresh.
Limiting screen time (especially social media) during revision hours it’s so easy to get distracted or start comparing myself to others who seem to be “doing more.”
Getting outside at least once a day, even if it’s just for a 20 minute walk, I’ve come to realise it clears my head and gives me a proper break from the desk.
Sleep I used to stay up late revising, but I’ve realised that being sleep-deprived just makes everything harder the next day.
Talking to someone Even just messaging a friend to vent a bit really helps when I’m feeling overwhelmed. As an international student, my close hometown friends and I are scattered all over the globe - we’ve collectively decided to hop on a short call once a week to help keep each other sane. Having a trusted group of people to meet up with, or call regularly can ease lots of stress and anxiety without you even noticing.

Would love to hear what works for you whether it’s a practical tip, a mindset shift, or just some encouragement. I've found tons more tips that have helped me here: https://bit.ly/4coFOBp

Hey. This thread is a really good idea. I do quite a few things to reduce my exam stress (I know it's going to be there regardless of what I do but as long as my stress level is manageable and doesn't affect the quality of my revision/work then it's fine with me).

Here's what I do:

Honestly during revision time, I limit my screen time to literally just revision websites (focus apps are a good way to do that).

I make sure that I don't feel too stressed by ticking off things on my revision to do list (lots of small achievements can be really motivating)

I try to take a 15 minute break every 2 hours or so and I cover different topics/papers in each session.

When I'm on my break, I just try to do the things I would do usually (e.g. chat to friends, listen to music, take a walk)

If I'm on my phone during my break, I keep a 15 minute timer so that I can strictly follow the plan bc I know that if I don't do that I'll accidentally be on a break for 30 minutes instead

Finally, I make sure that at any cost, I get 8 hours of sleep and I try to go to bed as early as I can (during my GCSEs I would literally fall asleep at 9pm on the dot no matter what I was doing)

Hey there 👋

My name is Siobhan and I’m a third year student at the University of Central Lancashire and this is a great topic! I completely get the exam stress and so here are some things that help me during this time:

Keep a list of things to do 📋

Having a visual representation of my progress can help me feel better when work feels slow

Ticking off things on a list can also feel rewarding, even if if a small thing!!

Don’t just revise, actually learn 🧠

Try and avoid just reading textbooks over and over again

Use other resources such as past papers and active recall to help you remember things better and to see progress!

Avoid caffeine ☕️

It can be so tempting to drink a lot of caffeine during this time can cause an energy crash and increased anxiety 😬

Eat regularly instead and drink plenty of water as this will be much better for your brain power!

Get enough sleep😴

Aim for between 7-9 hours a night as this will help you retain a lot more information

Sleeping is much more effective than cramming at 2am 🕣

Keep your body moving 🏃

I like to keep fit or even just go for a walk during exam season to help me get a change of scenery and get my mind of things

This will help boost your mind, energy and mood and also release all those stress related chemicals with endorphins

Lastly, be kind to yourself and find time to do stuff you enjoy as well! I hope this helps and please let me know if anyone has any questions 🙂
