University Requirements

I want to study BA Geography at a russel group university like Leeds or Manchester, but I’m worried about my GCSEs holding me back especially my maths.
My results are,
English lit - 6
English Lang - 7
Maths - 4
Science - 55
Geography- 7

Ah I want to study accounting at a russle group uni and got similar results, but I was told as long as you meet the gcse requirements you should have a decent chance of getting a offer
Some may require GCSE maths at a 5 or above as a general requirement - if so you'd need to rule those out or plan to retake maths. You may want to aim to retake maths at foundation tier anyway to get a 5.

Beyond that they're unlikely to be a significant factor.

Hi @hectorfineds

I currently study Geography BA at the University of Southampton (a Russel group) and for us personally the only requirements for GCSEs are a Maths and English Language grade of 4 minimum. You’ll find a lot of universities, unless Oxford/Cambridge, won’t worry too much over GCSE grades but rather focus on your A Levels grades.

I would say for Geography it’ll be very helpful if you’ve got a good understanding of maths since you’ll most likely be using statistics and data handling for your research and learning. So if you are able to study maths at A Levels it would be really beneficial to your time at university and later for your dissertation.

But saying that if the degrees you’re looking at doesn’t have a requirement for you to take a specific A Level, such as maths, it’ll probably be likely that they’ll do a module to teach you relevant things.

The best way to find out how much your GCSEs affect your acceptance at university would be to email the universities specifically. So for our university we have an enquiries team if you’re unsure about whether you have the right qualification to get onto a course - [email protected].

If you have any other question about studying Geography BA at university, don’t be afraid to ask anything at all! Hope this has helped,
Lucy
