Economics work experience y12

Hi I’m in year 12 and I want to do economics at uni. (I’m thinking of applying to Cambridge or lse as my first choice)
If I haven’t done any work experience, would this be a disadvantage or make my application look bad?
I know that work experience isn’t essential, but I’m worried bc everyone else around me seems to have done some kind of work experience.
I have done a few virtual 1 day work experiences, but I haven’t done any in-person ones. I applied to an inperson work experience a few months ago, but unfortunately I got rejected.

It wont make any difference at all. Economics is an academic degree, and you do not need 'work-experience' - what you do need is evidence of your academic interest in studying this subject, with examples of several topics within the subject that interest you, and why. They will want to see that you are starting to read/study/think beyond just A levels - and therefore you need to do extra reading etc. and be able to discuss this in your PS, and potentially at interview.

Hi there!

In all the honesty, the reason you are being rejected is because you are young, (I assume 16). It was the same with me when I tried to get work experience, I would get rejected because companies are more interested in undergrads as opposed to a year 12 student. There generally isn't much opportunity for 16 year olds to gain work experience. However, spring pod and forage offer work experience (virtual). I would not worry too much about work experience, you need to demonstrate a passion and genuine interest - consider doing some courses (future learn offer some free courses).

Also, I remember trying to find work experience and coming across a lot of websites where you pay hundreds of pounds to work for a week. I would not bother with those (not sure if they're still around!) because it is not needed, consider exploring some personal projects that are economics related - this shows initiative. Some extra reading can also be useful as well, showing interest beyond A-Levels - what careers are you considering? How do you keep up to date with the industry? This is useful in your personal statement.

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)
