Have you thought about doing something about the General de Gaulle and his time in the UK during the war. He is put on a pedestal by the French but was disliked by Churchill and Eisenhower so it could be quite interesting.

La guerre d'Algérie ? Avec le Front National de Libération et les attentats. To make it analytical you could get into perceived terr0rism by french citizens as Algerians were trying to get independence from colonisation and to what extent it was justified or not (you need something analytical if you want to get top marks). Or to what extent the execution of the "collaborateurs" after the second World War (public humiliation and execution of women that had slept with Nazis for example) was fair (as in these women were easy targets but did the actual collabo like Maréchal Pétain get punished as they should have). You could also do something about is there a link between the rise of far-right and immigration (if not, why is far right on the rise?) i don't know if none of these ideas appealed to you I can still brainstorm more stuff haha. You can also do something more historic, like la centralisation de la France autour de Paris (erasing other languages like Breton, patois, la langue d'oc) and the impact on régional cultures

I’m not sure « perceived » terrorism is the correct term and OP would have to tread very carefully because there is a close parallel to current events that might be best avoided. However remaining on the Algeria question and giving scope for statistical analysis is the role of the Harki ( Algerians that supported the French ) and their fate at the end of the war.

I mean for Algerians it was justified and it did have the effects they intended, it could be a good topic if OP wants to get controversial. I say perceived because it depends from which perspective you look at it, since France had some of the cruelest colonisation (Algeria is called the land of the million martyr for a reason) some people just see it as resistance and fighting back against an oppressive regime (and hundreds of Algerians were murdered in acts of racism in the 60s in France as well by police or harassed (massacre du 17 Octobre 1961) Harkis are a very good topic as well/as well as the colons that had to go back to live in France after living in Algeria for generations and were seen as "traitors" and wether this was justified or not. A very good movie is "Ce que le jour doit à la nuit" an adaptation of the book by Yasmina Khadra if OP wants to do their IRP on this. Élise ou La vraie vie by Claire Etcherelli is also a good book on how the FLN worked in France and the racism all the immigrants faced.

If you want to be controversial there most definitely is material available, but as the parent of students rather than a teacher who probably knows more about the criteria used to grade these topics, I would tend to say « play it safer »and don’t take the risk of upsetting someone who might have family who lived through the conflict.

All IRP titles get approved by the exam board before students start research so the French teacher will definitely give feedback on how appropriate the topics chosen are and if there is potential for enough analysis to aim for top grades or not
