Title: Will resitting my A-levels take up an extra year? (Gap year question)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in Year 13 and didn’t apply to any universities this year. My plan was to wait and apply after getting my actual A-level results this August (2025), rather than applying with predicted grades.

Now I’m getting a bit worried that my grades might not be good enough for the unis I want. So I’m thinking about resitting some A-levels next year. I’d rather not go through Clearing I’d prefer to apply properly in the next UCAS cycle with (hopefully) better grades.

My question is:
If I resit my A-levels and apply through UCAS in Jan 2026, will I lose an extra year? Or would I still be able to start uni in Autumn 2026?

Basically: does resitting = two gap years? Or just one?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can clear this up!

If you retake this year then you'd start university at 2026

So I won't have to wait another year after my gap year to start attending uni ?
Regardless of whether or not I've previously applied to unis ?
(I.E: I will apply for the 1st time after resitting)

Unless you intend on taking a gap year after a year of retake it's only one extra year, retaking in the academic cycle 25/26 means you attend uni at the 26/27 academic cycle

EDIT: I want to become a private candidate so I won't have predicted grades as I won't be attending a college.

Would that cost me an extra year ?

No though you will need to find a referee.

Hi, thanks so much for the guidance.

How does one find a referee ? Do you have to pay ?

(I wanna revise on my own terms and not have to enrol in any online or in-person program. )

Hmm, a referee is someone who can comment on your academic abilities.

And will they be able to give me predicted grades ? Since I'll need them to apply to UCAS before getting my new achieved grades after the resit.

Ideally, yes.

Only one gap year because you will not wait to have your grades to apply, you will find someone that will give you predicted grades (a referee) ideally from your old school, or read up on the UCAS website or you give yourself grades and find someone to approve them. If you choose to get your grades in September 2026 and then apply, (which is not very intelligent since you will need to waste an extra year) then you don't need a referee but why would you want to do that.

My predicted grades for my resit came from my head of sixth form. Ive heard of people who also get predicted grades from their private tutors as well.
