S6 Subjects

Am I overworking myself too much with these subject choices the columns are beyond awful in my school (My school forces us to take 5 subjects)

I done Modern Studies in S5 Predicted an A.
I also want to do Law at uni.

Advanced Higher English
Higher History (crash)
Higher Geography (crash)
Higher Politics (S6 only subject so technically a crash)
Higher Human Bio (crash)

Any advice?

what are all of your predictions for S5 & where do you plan to go for uni?

I’d say crashing higher human bio is pretty tough, considering you won’t need it for your subject choice, I would’t recommend that you take it alongside 3 other highers and an advanced higher.

Hi there (:

Yeah, that definitely does sound like a heavy workload!- depending on your S5 results/subjects you may not need to take that amount of highers - university courses usually require 4-5 Highers, some may require for instance a social subject to be one of these (you can check specifics on the uni websites), so long as you are meeting these requirements you do not need to take as heavy a workload!

If your school isnt going to budge on 5 subjects, you could always look into something lighter to balance it out like a N5 in a subject you enjoy, or see if your school offers any awards, or uni prep programmes (some schools do LEAPS, YASS, or even workplace skills awards). These can show your wider engagement without overloading your schedule + a different learning experience

for instance my highschool offered a N5 SCQF in retail -my sister took this since the school also wanted her to take more, although its not directly relevant to what she wants to do it gave you good skills for a potential part-time job + no end of year exam so less unnessary stress than if she was to take a random higher for the sake of it! (:

Your well-being is what matters the most!!, wishing u the best of luck!!! 💜 (fingers crossed they stop being silly once you have results and can explain its unnessary stress for qualification you dont need for uni!)

Predictions for S5 were AAAAC, I hope to go to edinburgh, strathclyde or glasgow.

I’d definitely try to cut out human biology, your grades are good. Try to pick up an N5 or coursework assessed subject in that place if you can.

Considering you wish to apply to Glasgow, you’ll need to sit the LNAT too, which takes a lot of preparation and you’ll need to sit it during the next school year, so I wouldn’t be taking all 5 higher+advanced subjects alongside that.

Narrowing your subject gives you more time to improve your grades, and higher biology is definitely one of the trickier highers, especially if you’ve never sat it at N5.

Also, for Glasgow (unless you’re widening access) you’ll most likely be offered a place for 1B at Advanced Higher level and maybe one more A at higher. So keep Adv English and spend a lot of time on it.

I’m unsure for Edinburgh & Strath, however.

Strathclyde wouldn’t be as strict and you’d probably get a lower conditional or maybe unconditional.

For Edinburgh though, they like to snub Scottish students, especially non-contextual ones.

I am contextual, do you have any idea what my offer would likely be?

My offer from Glasgow was a B at higher, and I had 4As in S5. It would probably be similar for you. My LNAT was 25, which is kinda middle of the road.

For Strath + Edinburgh. I got an unconditional for both, but with Edinburgh it may differ.

They consider contextual offers on different levels, and assign people “flags” or “plus flags".

If you’re eligible for a flag you’ll be prioritised for courses but still need to meet the standard entry requirements for the course.

A plus flag means you’ll be prioritised and will be made an offer from the minimum entry requirements. (This is how I got the unconditional with only 4 As). Look into which one you are
