GCSE English

What are your English language study techniques? I put so much effort into English studying, but I only got a 3 in English language and 5 in lit. Cannot believe why someone people can get 9 in English. My first language isn't English, that makes my life even harder, my worse part in creative writing, and I am bad at creative writing in my first language as well. 😭

i memorise ambitious words and use the lighthub if u want nt to achieve high grades i also suggest mr bruff and mr salles also for creative writing best to do is read books and practice and get someone to mark it.. as someone who's first language is not english i get your frustration but these resources rally helped keep going! p.s best way for creative writing is repetition and use 3rd person! really helps me^^

for english language its just about the way you speak and articulate your work. so just learn alot of high level vocabulary and just THINK outside the box to random ideas like make any link you can which links to the question.

like if if theres clouds over the sun perhaps clouds are covering the hope or warmth which shows..

use alot of alternative interpretations, dont just give one idea for one point

As someone on here said, I greatly recommend the Lightuphub if you want to access those higher grades - it is a paid service but absolutely worth it (look at the trustpilot for the reviews!)

Although lots of people who don't have English as their first language can do good at it, it is different for everyone!! OP can definitely do good at English too with the right resources and guidance

I really wouldn't try to overuse 'ambitious words,' it's better to use well chosen phrases rather than just through around random, impressive sounding words when you don't fully understand their meaning.

The key thing to getting a high mark is having some kind of complex idea. The one I used to get a 9 was basically I made a go-kart with my dad, but he died and I have to ride it without him being there to try and move on and process grief (just an example)

You also don't want much action - like the time period over your story should be like 1 or 2 minutes - doing too much action will just make it go on and on without a clear ending.

I would also structure it like this (just my advice, if this doesn't work don't do it)

D - Drop into the story - like start with some kind of action
S - Shift back to a flashback (I started every sentence of this with I remember.. I remember.. etc.)
Z - Zoom in on like a key detail (It could just be like your clothes or something - try to convey something)
L - Link back to the start, something needs to have changed (in my example it would be that I have processed the grief)

Remember to try and using some varied punctuation (;,: etc), and also different sentence/paragraph lengths - 1 sentence paragraphs can be for like a dramatic moment.

Don't use too much speech either.

Good luck!
