Want to go into medicine with low gcses

Hi, so I got low GCSEs in year 11, a 4 in maths, a 6-5 in combined science and a 7 in language. I managed to get into a level biology, chemistry and psychology and during my year 12 I resat my maths again, but the thing is I got a 4 again. The issue is that me and maths just don’t get along, my teachers and friends in maths since year 11 had been telling me that they had no expectations from me to pass and I think that really got to me, I just REALLY hate it and I think that was the reason I didn’t revise till like the week before my resit exam. I really wanna become a paediatrician, that’s been my lifelong dream and in my mocks I managed to get okay and my teachers predicted me an AAB.

I was hoping if I manage to get an AAA in my real thing in a levels next year it it’ll overshadow my GCSE’s and I can have a chance. I don’t even know if I’ll sit the ucat this year because I really wanna take a gap year, gain actual hospital work experience and apply back stronger and with a fresher mindset because right now I’m so confused and stressed!

Does anyone have any advise for me? I’ll really appreciate it

Most medical schools require at least a 6 in GCSE maths and English. Without this you won’t be shortlisted for interview. What other GCSEs did you get? Or did you only get four?

Hey,
This website really helped me, it highlights all the entry requirements for each medical school: https://www.medschools.ac.uk/studying-medicine/how-to-apply-to-medical-school-in-the-uk/entry-requirements
There are definitely a few medical schools that will accept the grade 4 in maths, you just have to apply strategically!
I definitely think if you are considering a gap year you should go for it, it’s a great way to get more experience (and to save some money 😂)
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions!
Apply to medical schools with only minimum GCSE requirements that don't score GCSEs. You'll need to retake maths however for certain.
