Oxford offer, which back up uni?

My daughter’s Oxford AAA offer is lower than all her other uni offers (Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol all want A*AA) apart from Newcastle (BBB).
She was on course for A*A*A but has been really ill over her A Levels and despite special consideration she is worried she might get a B in one of her subjects (not remotely connected to her degree choice).
Does she put Newcastle as her back up? If she can’t go to Oxford she would love to go to Durham or Edinburgh in an ideal world. Does anyone know of either of these universities are more likely to accept a lower grade than offered? If she does go to Newcastle she will no doubt have an amazing time, but just trying to figure out her options.

For Arts degrees, Durham, Edinburgh, and Bristol will be oversubscribed and not have places in UCAS Clearing, but they will often for Science degrees. Nevertheless, Newcastle is also a great university.

Have you made sure she has declared her illness to her Oxford college? If she doesn’t make her grades, there is a possibility they may take mitigating circumstances into account but only if they are declared as soon as possible and it must be before results day.

Yes, Newcastle is the reasonable option.

I agree Newcastle. If she misses AAA and Oxford won't take her (they may well do if its a near miss) its extremely unlikely Durham or Edinburgh will take her missing their offer by so much...low likelihood and huge consequence so Newcastle is much safer option.

Do you have to do this even if doctor’s report gone to A Level board? Thank you

It can do no harm to get in contact with the college admissions office direct. If they have also been told by the A level board when results come through, no harm done if they also know from you. But it’s really essential they know of mitigating circumstances so I wouldn’t take the risk that the A level board doesn’t pass on the information or that the school doesn’t get in touch with them.
