What is the average age of first years?

I’m taking a gap year and starting in the Fall of 2026. I will be 19 by then, turning 20 right before the end of year 1.

Is this normal? I dont want to feel like I am older than anybody else.

Please advise.

Daughter turned 20 during first year. Yes, she’s one of the older ones but not by much & was never an issue.

You'll probably find out that there's a good mixture of young and older students at almost every university in the UK never mind in Scotland.

When I was doing my degree for nursing I was 22 when I started it ( I have been qualified for two years) and there was younger than me ( between 17 - 20 ) and also ( more mature people who were 25 upto mid 40's ) throughout my degree so age isn't a barrier no matter how old or young you are as long as you are competent enough to complete your degree.

You'll be fine

I was 20 when I started (last year).

It’s fine and surprisingly a lot of people start at 20, or they are 19 and turn 20 in the first academic year. It is only weird to some of the 18/17 year olds, especially as the Scottish education is quite different in that you can start university at 16/17, and they might make a big deal out of it. However these people are quite immature and I’d recommend to avoid them. Like I said before it’s normal, fine, nobody cares and there are people older than me who started in first year.

20 is a normal age to start university and I’d advise it more than a younger age.
