2025 clearing and russel groups!

hello,
I think there is little chance I will be able to go to university for my desired course, which is business due to me messing up my economics papers, however these are my retakes. I think I will finish with AAC at best in a levels and I am planning to go through clearing. I just needed some advice.. should I take another year out and retake my exams again (which seems so crazy and unfortunate to me) or should I do philosophy at university instead,, i think i'd love the course and be very passionate and happy however I am aware it will get me nowhere in my life and I dont want to make this big of a decision and mess it up. Some people have told me it only matters if you have a degree to get a job, some have said it matters the degree. I am aware obviously its a big step down course wise.. but I don't know what to do! I know i have gotten myself into this situation by messing up my economics paper.. I would really appreciate any advice.

Hello there! (I love your user ID by the way)

Firstly - please try not to worry. You've done all you can do now, and even if you came out with AAC, these are still very good grades and on that basis I personally don't think you need to retake them again unless the C is in a subject you need for your course.

As Business courses often don't have specific subject requirements its very likely you'll still be able to get into a Business course through clearing, so don't give up hope until you've explored some Business or Management clearing options.

I would say that Philosophy is still a challenging and respected degree in a variety of fields. There are indeed many jobs you can enter with any degree, such as marketing/copywriting, working for a business, working in banking, journalism, the civil service, the military, the intelligence services (MI5/MI6/GCHQ), working at a university, project management - you can even train to become an air traffic controller or an estate agent with any degree! so really, if you have an open mind about what career you may want, you should do the subject you will enjoy more.

There is a wide variety of business courses out there and so (although there are no guarantees), there may well be some spaces in clearing. This UCAS page has a really helpful couple of pages on how results day works and the things you need to do to search through clearing options so hopefully this helps.

Best of luck and please let us know if you have any questions 🙂

Hi @ilovecats23444 😺

Thank you for your message 😊

As easy as it may be for me to say, please try not to worry too much about your grades until you've actually received them; you may have done better than you think! If you’ve put the hard work in, that’s what really matters, so please don’t be too hard on yourself.

Before considering whether or not to retake your exams, I’d definitely recommend waiting until results day. If business is what you really want to study, you’ll still have the opportunity to explore alternative universities through Clearing. Many institutions will be open to applicants with a range of grades and circumstances.

That said, if you’re open to studying Philosophy, and you think you’d be passionate about it, it’s absolutely a valuable and respected degree, with plenty of career options. It might be worth reaching out to the Philosophy department at the university you're considering to ask about graduate pathways and employability. You may be surprised by the opportunities it can offer!

Just to reassure you, this wouldn’t be a step down at all. You’re choosing something you care about, and that’s really important! If you start Philosophy and later change your mind, some universities may allow you to switch to another course (depending on space and requirements), so there may still be options.

Wishing you all the best, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to talk more about your options!

Best wishes,

Clare

Try to stop worrying. You have probably done far better than you assume. And if you just miss your offer, there is always a chance that your Firm Uni may still accept you. There really isnt much point in tying yourself in knots with all the 'what ifs' right now. All you can do is wait for August, and see what happens.

Hi ilovecats23444

University of Exeter already has some Business courses in clearing at our Penryn Campus near Falmouth. You can browse these on our Clearing 2025. BSc Business is listed as requiring grades BCC or you might like to check out our BSc Business and Environment interdisciplinary course bringing many skills into a single course. You can study in an amazing location, near the sea in a great cohort of students. All courses at Penryn take advantage of the unique environment around the campus, bringing the environment and sustainability into our student's learning and still while studying at a Russell Group University. You can find out more about the Penryn campus on https://www.exeter.ac.uk/about/cornwall/

You can start to prepare to apply through clearing now by researching our courses and registering your interest on our Clearing 2025 . Then when you have your results if it looks like we may have the course for you, you will be ready to apply. If you are made a clearing offer for the Penryn campus then we invite our clearing offer holders to visit and stay in uni accomodation to get a true feel for the campus and local area before you have to confirm your decision.

I hope this helps a bit with understanding some options while you wait for your results.
