Edinburgh Uni or Sheffield for mech eng?

In terms of university ranking, Edinburgh is higher than Sheffield. However for my chosen subject which is Mechanical Engineering Sheffield has higher entry requirements than Edinburgh. I’m now deciding on either one of these for my Insurance choice. Any thoughts?

Rankings are essentially meaningless marketing fluff, and even academics just ignore them. 'Higher entry requirements' are not going to tell you if you will like being at that Uni or enjoy the course anymore than the other one.

So - instead, you need to look at both courses in detail in order to work out which one interests you the most, ie. which optional units would you actually choose to do if you went there. Are there any opportunities for a work placement or study abroad - these add enormously to your graduate CV. You also need to think about the offer grades and what you might achieve in August, and which of these Unis you would still be happy to go to if your Firm choice rejects you.

Hi @Spsan!

Congratulations on your offers to study Mech Eng! Although I don't study the course you've applied for, I know a couple of people who do and some others doing other degrees in Engineering so hopefully I can offer some advice 🙂 They've all had really positive experiences with the course, there is lots of in-person teaching including lectures, small group work and practicals and there is lots of space for studying and group work in the dedicated Diamond building for engineering. I've also heard there are also lots of interesting extra-curriculars available within the faculty as well.

Sheffield as a uni and city in general is a great place to study, there are lots of sports and societies offered through the Students Union, and the accommodation available is very good as well, with a guaranteed accommodation policy for firm offer holders. The city has lots to offer, with many green spaces and the Peak District nearby as well.

I would also recommend not basing your decision entirely on grade requirements, it is important to consider which university and course is most suited to you and so I would recommend trying to visit both uni's as well if possible.

Hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions! I would also suggest chatting to one of our Engineering ambassadors on this platform: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/study/chat and they will be able to offer more insight into the course!
