What can I do to improve my personal statment and general knowledge? econ @ uni

Hiya I'm taking Economics Maths Chemistry and Physics a-levels right now and have year 12 exam results of A*AA*A. Hoping to get predicted of A*A*A*A by the end of the year. I'm also currently finishing off my EPQ on cryptocurrencies. I wondering what I can do and should be doing to have a competitive application for straight economics at uni and possibly land economy at Cambridge which I'm considering applying too. I think I'll need to develop more on the law and development economics side to make a competitive application for land econ.

Right now on the supercurricular side, I've got the general olympiads and competitions the school makes us enter, my EPQ, I've read Why Nations Fail and Animal Spirits for general interest, written essay and presented on evaluating the relationship between economic growth and education, taken part in the GAIN Investment Challenge, written and presented about 'Should we put a price on nature' and am going to try enter an essay competition this term. I'm also an economics rep at my school. This summer I am doing investment and private equity work experience.

On the more general side, I row at national level, have my bronze and silver crest awards (am working on gold), did the EDT Industrial Gold Cadets Project, have bronze and silver Dofe (working on gold), play the trumpet recreationally, voluteeer at my local cycling club and have my NPQL lifeguarding qualification and am working as a lifeguard. + law work experience

I know that your personal statment isn't so much about the number of things you have done but is instead about the quality and how you link them in and show what you learnt, took away and further developed but any advice on books, competitions, applying for land economy or econ at a competitive university would be much appreciated. Thank you!!!

Wow you really have a lot going on and there's definituely great potential for a really good personal statement. I think the importance you should place should be on showing your continued interest and how its taken you on a journey. Eg you did that investing competition which then inspired you to read XX book and then enter XX essay competition etc. Hope that helps. I don't know how interested Unis are for awards that you have done a long time ago (but I don't know when you did the CREST award) but picking the most valuable (and recent) examples and running with them gives you a very good chance of getting into a top uni. I think for something like land economy may require you to hand in some form of written work but I may be wrong?

If you row at the national level, have you thought about reaching out to Ivy League rowing coaches (and stanford if you're a girl) about recruitment opportunities? What's your 2k erg time?

https://questionnaires.armssoftware.com/e1e4225f65a3 - each school's rowing team will have a questionnaire like this you can fill out

No overseas students should be contemplating study in the US at the moment.

Your application will definitely be competitive I have gotten into Oxford (not for econ tho ) with the same predicted grades as you and a lot less extracurriculars. I would say spend nearly all of your personal statement exploring the academic super-curricular stuff and try to set up questions in your personal statement that they would want to ask you. e.g. talk about a legal or ethical issue within development economics and explore it a little but acknowledge there is much more to say. You want to make the admissions officer think they would enjoy having an academic discussion with you and this would guide convos In an interview to things you actually know about. I’m also a rower like you and I have my dofe’s but stuff like that took up less than 2 lines in my statement.
I would also say especially for Oxbridge treat ur statement like an essay on the topics u are interested in using your experience as evidence rather than a list of linked achievement. Hope this helps !!

Okie thank you so much I'll make sure I'm linking it. Yes a few of the colleges do require written work.

Hi! Would you be interested in chatting with a Cambridge Economics graduate?
We’re currently running a user research project to better understand what students applying to Oxbridge care most about your thoughts and feelings would be incredibly valuable.

If you’d like to share your experience and chat with a Cambridge Econ alum, feel free to reach out! He’d be happy to offer advice and answer any questions you have.
