2nd Year House worries - need advice

So me and 5 friends sort of rushed into finding accom as we wanted to get it sorted early.

I found a landlord and we ended up going for a house that is a 40 minute walk from the uni (11 minute cycle according to google maps) and a 40 minutes walk from town centre which has buses stop at 6pm.

I’ve been stressing a lot about this recently because it’s so far away from uni and town centre, is this going to affect our social life a lot?

I wanted to go for a house closer to uni but I was convinced by another friend in this house to go for this one since the rooms are slighter bigger and it is cheaper by about £10 a week.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or could give me a reality check on this? Would Ubers be a good method to go around when there’s 6 of us? Is Google maps cycling accurate?

Thanks for any help

Hi there!

I would say that although it sounds long, 40 minute walk from town is not too bad! I know you won't want to walk to uni every day, especially if it is raining etc, but if you can get the buses during the day this isn't too bad as you can get the bus to and from uni if you want and you can usually get student tickets which are slightly cheaper too. However, you might just enjoy walking - I live about 30 minutes from uni but I actually really enjoy the walk! It's a nice walk and really distresses me if I am worried about uni work or if uni has been stressful so don't worry about the walk to uni too much.

With going to town, you will either have to walk or get ubers and if you are going out, you will likely end up getting ubers. However if you split this between 6 of you, you can get a bigger one and it shouldn't cost too much each so it won't be too bad.

It won't affect your social life - it would only do this if you stop going out as it is further away, but if you just get ubers or walk to town, it won't change anything in this sense.

Do you have local pubs? This is also quite fun and you don't always need to go to town to have a fun night. If you have students living near you too, you will still have fun with other students near you!

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Youll be fine, if you’re used to 30 minutes today you will just start to mentally adjust your patterns. Most people actually factor in latency when they are socialising or heading into university so you’ll find the real increase in length versus what you are used to today really isn’t that bad. You’ll probably find as well lots more students live around you if you’re in a “value” area, most students are skint.

Hey there 😀
40mins walk away from Uni isn't too bad once you get use to it 🤗 I also used to live about a 35min walk from my campus and did not have any great bus connections in the area I was living in. If you find the walk too much, you can always try getting a bike off facebook marketplace and cycling to uni or trying one of those public bike sharing services eg. Lime and Forest! Ideally, you may also not need to go into uni for class everyday of the week and work from the comfort of your own space ☺️ Hope it works out well for you.
