Hi there! 😊 I'm a current undergraduate student here at Plymouth and, although I don't study optometry, I'd be happy to give you a bit of insight from a student's perspective!
Plymouth is a very diverse university, but also city- there are many students from all across the UK and abroad, from different backgrounds and cultures. There is also lots of representation from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities in our students union, which supports students across academics and student life as a voice between the university and students themselves. There are also many student groups and societies which you can join, with many related to certain cultures or backgrounds, to help you find a community you feel comfortable in and to meet new people studying at Plymouth. 🌟
Moving out for the first time is always daunting- I definitely found this too as I was moving from around 5 hours away, but you definitely won't be alone and you are bound to meet lots of likeminded people from all walks of life, whether on your course, in your halls of residence, at social activities, or in societies and clubs or student groups. I'd recommend getting involved as much as you can when starting at Plymouth to give you the best chance of meeting lots of new people and finding your community/university family! 👋
If you have any more questions about the university, student life, or city, feel free to let me know! 😄

Hi, I don't know anyone doing optometry with a foundation year, but do know people who do optometry and a person who's done a foundation year. From what I've been told, it seems like the foundation year is similar to A-Levels, with a bit more of a focus on what you're going to be studying next year (i.e. optom). As for optometry, there's a lot of content and practical skills, but it's not too overwhelming in the first year - I know people who revised a month or two before exams and have done really well. Hope this helps
