Medicine at Oxbridge

Hi, I am a year 12 student in sixth form who is looking for some honest but friendly advice.
I am worried about potentially applying for Cambridge because of my gcses.
My GCSEs are 999887764
The 9s are biology, chemistry maths, 6 in english language and 4 in photography (a big surprise as I was predicted an 8)
I know Cambridge look at GCSEs contextually and I come from a state school which is just below the national attainment average, so come from a relatively low achieving school in a polar quintile 2 area.
I am doing biology, chemistry and maths at a level and am predicted AAA (in my school the don't predict A*s until yr13, apart from for UCAS), but I have consistently been getting A* in internal tests.
I have been doing lots of reading and have done work experience in a hospital and in a few weeks a GP clinic
I am part of a medical society and am a head student at my school. I will also be running my own medical society next year.
Any advice on whether it is worth applying or not as medicine only gets 4 applications?
Thank you for reading!

I mean you need more then AAA, assuming you get higher on your predicteds will be fine.
In terms of GCSEs, you'll definitely be disadvantaged, but there are no requirements and you can make up for it in other parts
I'd still apply, but make sure you ace the UCAT and interview, and have some safer picks as well!
Also, make sure to manage your expectations because Cambridge is ultra competitive, but good luck!

I am on track to get A*AA, teachers just don't predict A*s at my school, thank you so much for your advice and it will depend on the UCAT if I apply or not 😁

Hey so i went to a medical conference last year and got advice from actual doctors and med students. They said cambridge focuses less on GCSES (theyre still important) and they also said cambridge offers interviews to about 80% of applicants so its worth a shot. Ur at another disadvantage cus ur school doesnt predict A*s which is pretty selfish imo, but if u can ace ur interview + personal statement then i think u have a shot. U have a greater chance of getting into russel groups such as ucl so make sure to apply there ! Good luck

Hey I would check to see if you qualify for any widening participation idk what they offer but at some unis it adds extra points onto your application. I didn't apply for oxbridge but medicine in general is extremely competitive anyway so even though there's a high possibility they won't care that much about your personal statement, you should write a decent one still. They aren't just looking for grades they're looking for a well rounded individual. See if they have a specific format for the personal statement. I know keele did and it just reassured me that I wasn't writing gibberish. Also maybe get medify this summer bc I think you're going to need a pretty good ucat score too! You're work experience sounds great btw. Good Luck!!!

Thank you! I don't qualify for widening participation unfortunately but I will definitely look at personal statement formats.

Bro pls I need advice …So my school has decided predicted grades andI’m at A* A* B . In bio chem and mathsrespectively. I rlly wanna apply for medicine thisyear, I haven’t been doing so well in maths tho. Myschool says they have a no leniency policy aboutpredicted grades, and they won’t change predictedgrades after the summer. But say if I do rlly well inmy ucat, do u think I could convince my teacher tochange my predicted grade from B to an A?? Bc ifI get a high ucat , and I’m already predicted A* A*in bio and chem - maths is the only thing stoppingme. If I don’t get A in maths then I have to take agap year just bc of my maths grade 💔

Nope ☹️ they do if u have contextual, but I’m not eligible for that. I lowkey don’t know what to do, if I take a gap year I won’t have anywhere to stay as my parents will kick me out..

Have you had a proper convo with your school about anything you could do - and explained how you won't be able to do med?

Loads don't look at predicted grades so just apply anyway and if u don't get it there are loads of different things you can do through clearing and apply for grad entry med

Not all of them do. That's why I chose to apply to Cardiff and Keele

Yeah I guess but those look at GCSEs so you need good GCSEs to get in - I apologise I was wrong though.

I’d have a meeting with your head of year. Explain you are aiming for medicine, in which you need at least 3A’s for practically every Uni. Ask to raise maths to an A, not an A*. Say that over the summer you’re going to revise maths loads, maybe even get tutoring. Explain that you are willing and capable to raise your grade and are already doing well in your other subject which proves you can work hard. Explain to them if you do end up missing your predicted grade next year then that will be on you (whether you have an offer or not). By not raising it to an A now they are taking away the opportunity for you to even apply. Offer again to redo a mock in your own time September to prove that you’ve improved, even if this isn’t commonly done. And try your best on the UCAT too just to have an extra thing to show them you are committed to medicine.

Just to add, Oxbridge are definitely not the only/best medical school in any way, you get the same degree from each of them and no one ever asks which uni you went to in the NHS, even if you were to apply to another country any decent Russel group uni is enough.
In my opinion, your GCSEs are quite low comparatively, so you'd have to get a pretty high ucat to have a fighting chance.
As well as this, everyone getting an interview at Cambridge could either work for or against you, if you aren't good in this interview (the most important thing for Cambridge is the interview) your chances are slim to none.
Very best of luck all the same.
