Joint Honours - Help me decide my diss!

I'm a BA English Lit and History student coming into my 3rd year. My uni wants us to start making dissertation decisions by the end of this month, but I'm super torn between English and History as I genuinely enjoy both equally. There are some significant differences between each subject's dissertation, but I wanted to get advice from joint honours students who've already been here. How did you decide which subject for your diss?

Hi @mcmm1

Hope you are well.

I also studied a combined degree in Business Management & Marketing, so I had to decide on what subject route I was going to use for my Dissertation. One topic did stand out for me in my Marketing Modules, was Consumer Behavior. So, if you have any stand out topics from you current studies that interest you the most from either subject that is a good start for coming up with an idea.

If you wanted to try and combine your subjects, speak to supervisors and see if you can arrange a quick meeting to discuss this further, they might be able to also help with ideas.

One key point to mention when picking your question, is make sure it is something you are interested in.

I hope this helps you, wishing you good luck with your dissertation!

Hey @mcmm1,

I did a joint BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art and Art History. Although I was initially unsure about what the focus of my dissertation should be, I tried to consider the common themes in my artistic practice (Fine Art) and my research (Art History). I realised that I'd frequently looked at economic policy and financial concerns throughout both, and decided the focus of my disseration should therefore be economic-based. Whilst this might seem like a bit of a departure from my degree on the surface, I knew I could connect all of my themes relatively easy, and my dissertation ultimately explored the volatility of the art market through a historical lens.

Try to meet with your dissertation supervisor/lecturers during office hours to dicuss any ideas you might currently have. As mentioned by Jack above, there should be some way to combine your interest in both English and History; it's just about finding a way to do it.

Hope this was helpful and best of luck with your dissertation next year! 🙂
Eve (Kingston Rep).
