Worried about my academics

I want to study nursing but not sure whether Oxford brookes could make up to my imaginations. I am worried about placements, job after graduation, part time job availability if possible, travelling and many more.

So, you're worried about:
my academics,
placements,
job after graduation,
part time job availability,
travelling, and
many more.

That's quite a list! I get the impression that you worry a lot generally. Have you found any particular strategies that help? For example, for some people doing research (e.g. on how to travel to/from a place) might reduce their anxiety, whilst for others it might lead to more concerns and more anxiety. Does knowing more about an area of concern tend to help you feel less anxious?

You say you're "not sure whether Oxford brookes could make up to my imaginations". It almost certainly won't, as you've probably created an impression in your mind or having a perfect, flawless, experience at university with engaging and interesting lectures, wonderful friends, a fulfilling set of activities, etc. Reality (at any university) is unlikely to be so perfect. There will be aspects which are great, and which are not.

Have you been to visit Oxford Brookes on an open day, or similar? What did you think?

Yah knowing more about an area of concern certainly reduce anxiety. Maybe u could help..
Well in terms of jobs after the degree for nursing - there's shortages or nurses all over the country so there is definitely going to be a job somewhere, although if you're tied to a specific location this may be more limiting. But I suspect you will be able to find a nursing position somewhere or another given how much need there is for new nurses!

I can try, but I'd need to know more details about your concerns.

For example, you say you're concerned about "my academics". Are you concerned that you won't get the grades you require? Have you applied already? Have you received a conditional offer? What were the grade requirements of that offer? What grades do you think you might achieve? Or perhaps you feel that the subjects you've chosen might not be appropriate? Or the qualifications themselves (A levels vs. BTECs vs. Access to HE Diploma etc. etc.)

For your "travelling" concern, are you worried about getting from your home town to Oxford Brookes? Or are you worried about travel between your accommodation and your lectured? Or between you home country and the UK? What are you concerned about? The cost? Being confused by the timetable? Getting lost? Something else?

Hi @anonymous #1,

Thank you for your message 😊 We are really pleased to hear that you are considering Oxford Brookes!

Our nursing programmes are designed to prepare you not just academically, but also practically and professionally. You’ll spend 50% of your course in clinical placements, which take place across a range of NHS Trusts and healthcare settings. This gives you valuable, hands-on experience, where you will learn how to care for people in a variety of settings, meeting their mental and physical health needs across their lifespan 🩺.

In terms of employment prospects, nursing is one of the most employable degrees in the UK, and our graduates go on to a wide variety of roles across the NHS, private practice, and community healthcare. We also have a dedicated careers service to support you with job applications and interview preparation.

If you’re wondering about working while you study, many students do have part-time jobs, particularly during less intensive periods. Our on-campus Careers team can help you find roles that fit around your timetable.

As for travelling 🚘️, Brookes has great transport links - whether you're getting to placements, travelling around Oxford, or thinking about travelling home during the holidays. We also offer support with travel costs for placement journeys in many cases.

There’s a lot to consider when deciding what and where to study, but please don’t worry, we’re here to help.

If you’d like more information, I’d really recommend getting in touch with our admissions team at: [email protected] or attending one of our Open Days, where you can meet staff and current students, ask questions, and get a real feel for the course and the university.

I hope that this helps!

Best wishes,

Clare
